Jimmy Carter Leaves Church Over Treatment of Women
« on: April 11, 2012, 07:20:02 am »
Good for Jimmy.

Quote
the former president called the decision "unavoidable" after church leaders prohibited women from being ordained and insisted women be "subservient to their husbands."

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Agreed, but this was about 3 years ago, I think.

Holy crap, you're right! My apologies. A friend just posted this on Facebook--news to her as it was to me, I suppose--and I thought it was worth bringing here to the Cauldron...and in my haste, I failed to examine it more closely.

It happens. I remembered it because I think we discussed it here on TC.

And I've been around long enough that I ought to remember. But I don't always catch all the threads I'd be interested in.

::nods:: TC can be a very busy place and when it is, it is easy to miss entire threads.

Carter had also been involved with the SBC for about a bajillion years.
I wonder what the 'straw' was that occasioned so final a decision.

Yeah I mean the SBC really hasn't changed in about 100 years, so why did it take him so long to leave. I left the Southern Baptist church at 20, wish i had gone sooner.

In your experience was the SBC really as misogynist as Carter claimed?

Most definitely, very male driven. All pastors are Men, only pastor that was ever a woman was the children's minister. The men that control the church the deacons are all men. They believe that only men can serve as leaders of the church.

Did you ever hear them saying that women must be subservient etc.?

I was raised in Texas and there are SBC churches in every town, sometime 2 or more. The town I grew up in had 3 relativity large SBC churches and one or two small one.  Yes they have the opinion that women should stand behind there husband and that the husband is the leader of the family and the wife should serve her husband.

My daughter's biological father grew up SBC. I can tell you second-hand that this kind of thing is most assuredly part of the teachings/beliefs.
