D.J. Conway has passed away

According to a post on her official Facebook page, D.J. Conway “passed into the loving arms of the Goddess on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019. She gifted this world and all of us with the knowledge of the Old Ones through her wit and wisdom. The cares of this world are now lifted from your body, mind, and spirit.”

From the Wild Hunt article.

And an article by Jason Mankey at Raise the Horns.

I also found this article by my friend Diane interesting -- about how the outright vitriol directed her way in life has turned into "fond remembrances" in death.

Personally, while there was definitely stuff in her work that was...well, bad -- her books still inspired me as a young witch. I still have a very beat up copy of Animal Magick somewhere that I'll likely never get rid of.

What is remembered, lives.

Her early books were fairly bad. She did, however, seem to get better from the few of her later books I've seen.

She was not the best, certainly. However I repurchased a copy of her Dancing with Dragons when I heard the news of her passing, for of nostalgia sake. It's already arrived and I'm pleasantly surprised at how much fun it is to look through.

I seem to recall Celtic Magic being the book lent to me by a friend when I was 14 or 15 (and still *devoutly* Catholic). I read parts of it, then carefully gave it back as "not for me."

Her legacy is complicated, for me as well.  My group Pagan practice continues to follow the eclectic Wiccan format that I was trained in, even as I try for better history in my personal practices.

I still have some of her books on my shelf, though I haven't read them in years. I do use the Celtic Dragon Tarot, though more for Lisa Hunt's artwork.

Yeah, I got started on her Norse magic book. It was one of a handful of texts that got me started. I was always interested in ancient history, even as a weird elementary school kid. “Mysteries of the Past” by Lionel Casson was another book that influenced me, for instance. But books like “Norse Magic” got me thinking about spirituality.

The first of my major religious experiences was during a ritual loosely following her methodology (If I recall, I was a teen at the time.)  Gateway paganism has its place. It’s thought-provoking for those who are young and searching, even if we don’t necessarily find it insightful anymore.
