Botched Restoration
« on: August 23, 2012, 02:00:49 pm »
While I'm not a Christian, I do adore Catholic iconography. I adore art. I adore history and spiritual efforts to combine some or all of the last three....

...which is why this article makes my heart ache.

I do altar art, icons, and pagan art!

Horrifying.  And also tragicomic.  And it reminds me of this.

...Does anyone else think that the botched restoration makes it look like Curious George?

That woman had to have known it wouldn't end well, and yet she just kept plugging away.  So sad.

Ouch. That's pretty painful to see.

I keep trotting out "Remember, it’s not a transformation if it isn’t totally ruined!"  So handy.

They were talking about this on NPR with an art restorer, Hopefully, the woman used stuff that is less sticky than what the artist used, and there might be a chance.  Maybe.

She also commented that this sort of thing is more common in the US, people try to clean a painting, muck it, try to fix it, much that up and show up at this lady's university's workshops that they hold, looking really embarrassed and begging for help.  If they've used something more long wearing than what the artist used, usually, there's nothing they can do.

Yeah, even watching Antiques Roadshow, they say that the restorers can do a botched job when cleaning paintings, but... this is really. Just... wow. I almost feel sorry for the little old lady who thought she was helping...

I thought that was a place to make new paintings-- but unless I'm being dumb, you just put phrases on it?

As for the case in the OP - I may take to using that to explain why, no, really, INTENT IS NOT MAGIC.  Perhaps something concrete like that will illustrate it more effectively to those who are being defensive about how they meant well.

Or perhaps not; perhaps the people who believe toes don't get hurt unless they're intentionally stepped on also believe the examples in your Regretsy link constitute a perfectly reasonable approach to restoration.  (I'm not sure how the "but I didn't intend it Like That" perpetrators of social injustice will handwave, but I can already hear the pagan subspecies whining about how they're sure that pink-and-white stripes must have felt right to the person who did it.)

Huh?

I believe she's referring to the link in my previous post.  Unless there's a band called The Pink Stripes.  Which there totally should be.
