Medical Malpractice: Ky. Hospital Merger Places Health Care Under Church Control

Americans United has monitored hospital mergers for a number of years now, pointing out that when Catholic hospitals join with non-Catholic institutions, Catholic doctrine is imposed, and certain services are lost

I want to know why they are merging.  This is actually important to the discussion.

That's what I'd like to know, too.

There was a link I didn't see in the AU piece.

Per the Inside Higher Ed piece, the existing hospital is not part of the University; it's only affliated. Somebody have a better explanation of what could mean?

Could this merger be a choice of merge or die for the existing hospital?  Ie, no care vs care with Catholic restrictions?

GoogleMaps shows at least 5 other hospitals nearby, but doesn't say much about sizes to my viewpoint.

That's really my question too.

It's a private hospital that rents university land, but apparently also provides most of the low income care, which is the problem, since the low income people would be the ones losing services.  However,  if the hospital itself closes cause it can't afford to stay open, they'd lose care too.

Lose many reproductive of services or lose 100% of all services for all the poor people in the area.

I'd hope that somebody is able to follow up on this in a year or two. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for. AU is concerned about women (mostly) losing access to many reproductive services.  I'd count it worse if most of the poor people lose access to all services.  A reason given would allay my point / concern.

There's also some concern w/r/t end of life decisions. That's a biggie in my book.
