What would Taweret be to a non-mother?
« on: October 06, 2017, 12:08:31 am »
I know the usual answer to that kind of question is "Ask Her!", but I am not really getting any clear answers here, just a vague sense that I ought to be honoring Taweret in some sense, but I am very much childfree (apart from the quadrupedal adoptive kind) for sound medical reasons both physical and mental, besides getting up towards peri-menopause, so it seems like I am kind of the *last* person who should be honoring a goddess of childbirth, almost like honoring a goddess of chastity in a whorehouse!   Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

She's also protective household goddess, not just a goddess of childbirth. Maybe that's the aspect She's trying to get you to honour? Maybe try setting up a household shrine to Her (and Bes?) and see what happens.

That...makes very good sense.  Especially with things that are going on in my life recently.

Do you have any resources for suggestions on that( particularly on an emergency-tight budget)?  I think I saw a Kemetic wiki page with some suggestions for particular gods, maybe that will have some ideas I can use.

Well, my household shrine is a Graeco-Roman-Egyptian mess, so I'm not much help in that regard, but if you want somewhere to start, Taweret, Bes, and Bast are all household gods, and you could always print out pictures from the internet, or even just write their names on some paper or do some art of your own, and grab a candle and a libation bowl, and see how that develops. If you can set it up by your front door, or close to the hearth/centre of your home, they would be ideal places, but wherever you have room will be fine, I'm sure.

Kemetic household practice isn't really that well-developed in modern Kemeticism, so there's not really a lot to draw on, but there are some scholarly articles around about the household cult if you look for them. I bodged up some simple household rituals a while back, but I never got around to doing anything for Bes and Taweret, because I couldn't figure out what to do and how often. There are a lot of gaps. But maybe just having a space for Them and making prayers asking Them to protect you, your household, and your property, and offering water when you can might lead to some inspiration for you. And I'd love to hear what results you get from it.

Well, here's a start: https://ibb.co/jHK5cb

I need to find something nicer than just the little name paper I have for Bes( and perhaps a better libation container when I can afford it), but He's not as easy to sculpt as the other two and, since He doesn't appeal as much to the general decorative market, is harder to find statues of than other Egyptian gods.

Your mention of Bast in this context reminded me that I had made that little Egyptian cat statue years ago as a teen when my intentions were only decorative rather than devotional.  She hasn't really been talking to me that I noticed, but I was able to find Her box in the basement surprisingly easily, so it seemed appropriate She be dusted off and mended to add to the shrine.

Meanwhile, Taweret there is my first attempt in many years at sculpture, and my skills are very  rusty but thankfully She is an uncomplicated shape to get (re)-started with.

I actually have a mask for Bes for the household shrine - I got a friend who does maskmaking to help me do it.  Apparently Bes mask and lion tail sets have been found in some ancient sites, and the theory is that people would dress up as him to scare off the haunts.

I haven't made the tail yet, but i did consult with a furry on how. ;)

I like this idea!  Costuming is a joy I haven't been able to indulge as much as I've wanted to in recent years.  :)

Well, here's a start: <a href="https://ibb.co/jHK5cb"><img src="https://thumb.ibb.co/jHK5cb/IMG_20171101_184220.jpg" alt="IMG_20171101_184220" border="0"></a>

Aha, HTML. TC's forum software (most forum software, AFAIK) uses BBCode instead, though. I'll fix the above for you (to a link; I've had mixed results trying to post images directly into TC posts).

We do have an 'insert image' button for posts (you'll find it above the reply box, first on the left in the second row of buttons, right next to the 'insert hyperlink' button), which, given my mixed results, you might want to experiment with in our Test Forum. If you want more info, you can check the SMF Online Manual (SMF is the forum software we use) or the BBCode Users Guide.

Ah, thanks.  I wasn't quite sure what to do with it!
