Pics or it didn't happen, right? Here's what usually serves as my KO Senut shrine, and tonight doubled as Wesir Mysteries HQ. (The picture I took of the Ancestor altar - with Wesir's candle - doesn't want to upload tonight.)

So it's getting around that time of year again where you've got the Mysteries of Asar going on. Anyone doing anything to celebrate or mourn?

So I'm sitting here frantically researching to make a blog post (which will go up on the Festival Proper according to my rendition of the Medinet Habu calendar, which I favor for the Mysteries) and I come across something that's supposed to be recited at the third hour of the night on Ntryt, which is tonight, though we're a bit past the third hour, so I get up and I light lights and incense and I recite it and I offer fresh water and I go back to research and ...

Anyway, this is the text, quoted in Jan Assmann's Death and Salvation In Ancient Egypt, page 267, more or less as I read it (incomplete edits on the fly):

The great decree that is issued in reference to the nome of the netherworld
fixed in the night of the diadem
to cause that Wesir be installed as ruler in the nome of the netherworld
while his ba appears in the Hale Eye
and is transformed atop his form.
What is carried out during the Divine night, in the dreadful night,
that night of going away and becoming distant,
that night of the going forth of the voice,
that night of lonely sleep,
that night of great defensive magic,
that night of hacking the earth in tears,
that night of loneliness,
that night of mourning,
that night of hacking the earth, when the whole land gazes upon Sokar,
Upper and Lower Egypt are in silence,
and the entrance to the closed place remains at rest.

If I were doing strict follow this would be a festival night to be up all night doing protective magics and lamentations, which I primarily note as an interesting reference for myself for some other year.

And thread necromancy... go. What are you guys doing to prepare for the Mysteries this year?

I would like to do something, since I honor Ausir regularly, but I have no idea what the Mysteries are about or what would be appropriate.

I guess for me the first step would be research. *goes off to research things*

If you're not already stalking Devo's Kemetic blog you absolutely should be.

Here's a good post on a Wesir Mysteries ritual.

I'm not sure, yet. I need to get planning on it. I think its going to involve a lot of reflection and healing, since I've experienced a lot of loss in the past year.

Probably will involve a lot of drowning, too, I'm afraid :\

It's kind of bizarre to consider where I was last year when I celebrated the Mysteries. That was a whole year ago... but also, it's only been a year?!? I second the desire to focus on healing. I feel like that's been my primary focus for months.

I'm working on what I want to do for them, but it's been a slow process and other parts of my life are being all-consuming/soul-sucking currently.

When exactly are the Mysteries? I've seen a lot of info on rituals, but I've got no idea when they're actually supposed to be performed...

They are rites that are performed for Osiris. That's why there is info on rituals- because that's kinda what they were :P A series of rites performed regarding Osiris' resurrection, basically. Traditionally, you'd have a week of events marking Osiris' felling and his mythical overcoming of death. You'd have plays and reinactments of smiting Set and his minions. And it was all capped by a night vigil where the djed pillar is raised- which Osiris is the djed in this case (symbolically). The raising of the djed is the raising of Osiris, his overcoming death, as it were.

It's kinda hard to explain, and there isn't a whole lot of information on it. For myself, it's a time of mourning and death, following by the shedding of the old and starting of the new. And for me, instead of it only being a week, my rites for it tend to be closer to a month in length, so YMMV.

ALsoooooooooooooooooo

Someone asked me on Tumblr today about the Mysteries. I grabbed a ton of links n crap I've been hoarding over the years about Mysteries and tried to throw them all into one post. I don't know if it will be helpful for anyone, but here it is, all the same.
