Balancing honoring Set and Ausir?
« on: September 03, 2013, 02:05:50 pm »
Set recently helped me with a situation with a different God, help that I needed desperately at the time.  Now that the dust has settled, I've realized that He's stuck around.

Those of you who work with Set--what's He like?  I keep hearing that He'll flip your life upside-down given the chance, is that true?

Does anyone here worship/work with/honor Ausir?  I've been building my relationship with Him and it's tricky with only UPG to rely on, since I've found almost nothing online about Him.

As for balancing honoring Set and Ausir--does anyone have experience with this?  If so could you share some UPG?

Set owns my ass, and I'm happy to answer specific questions (and I suspect others here are as well).  He is Lord of Obstacles and Master of the Ordeal - your life will be flipped if it needs to be to make it work.  He demands action and conscious choice.

I do not.  However, Ausir is one of the most well-documented of the netjeru - hell, he's the one everyone has heard of (usually under the name Osiris).  Where exactly have you been looking?

There's no balance needed.  They're brothers and they don't hate each other.  Working with one doesn't mean you can't work with the other, nor does it mean you have to work with both.

As soon as I read that, the words "SHADOW WORK" rang through my head in the most ominous tone imaginable.  I have a feeling saying "I know, I know I'll do it [insert time period here]" isn't going to work with Him.

Are there any specific offerings Set likes?  So far I'm sticking with the traditional bread and cool water.

Himself is one of the two gods heavily associated with getting drunk in the mythology; I have never known him to turn down a drink (especially a strong one).  However, he is canonically a kind of obnoxious drunk.  He also is said to eat a lot of lettuce.  (Note: in Egyptian symbolism, lettuce is an aphrodesiac food.  It would be reasonable to extrapolate this to 'foods that are culturally considered aphrodesiac', I suspect.)

Think more along the lines of monster work or ordeal work, actually.  And, you can always say you'll do it later - that's a conscious choice, after all.  You just have to know what to expect when making said choice.

Bread and cool water work.  So does beer.  I once offered a piece of Big Red gum and got both a laugh and a "NEVER AGAIN!"

What do you mean by monster work?

When I say monster work, I mean working directly with the monster(s) in myself.  Rather than locking them up in the proverbial closet, I face them on a routine basis to make sure they are fed and get what they need so they don't sabotage me.

I wrote a blog post about it last year for the Pagan Blog Project - Monster Work.

That's just my $0.02, though.  YMMV.

I'm a fair bit late to the party here, but thank you for this! Set has made it VERY CLEAR he wants to be a part of my life and my spiritual work. Reading this has helped me know what to expect. And so far what you've said has been kind of true.

Good to know he's pretty consistent.

In my experience that Siracha, Frank's Red Hot sauce, and anything related to buffalo chicken is entirely appropriate and hungrily eaten. Same with dark rum, especially Kraken (which is a very strong black spiced rum). The fact that the bottle has imagery of some sort of a monster is a double bonus as he has shown to me that he is lord of monsters and freakish things.

Also Set is pretty cool. He gets this reputation as this big terrifying monster of a god, which in many respects is very true. But he's the god you bring your problems to and he'll say "Okay, we're fixing this shit. Now. Hold on to your ass." He's a straight shooter if there ever was a god who personified it. So long as you are honest and take on your issues, own them, and do something to make things better then he is your strongest ally. Also, dick jokes...expect dick jokes. And very inappropriate, often dark humor. :D:

This has been my experience with Set, as well. He is eager to help you if you ask, but the man does not tolerate whining.

I haven't been working with Set for very long, but this definitely sounds accurate to my experiences so far.
