Tarot Symbolism and Ancient Egyptian Gods
« on: September 13, 2012, 06:24:18 pm »
Have any of you read this book?
Do you have any theories between the potential connection between the Tarot and ancient Egyptian Gods?

My theory is that it's fluffy bullshit.

Given that I'm pretty sure that Tarot, (as we know it, I believe that Cartomancy has in some form or another been around since the invention of drawing pretty pictures on bark,)  arose in, (correct me if I'm wrong,) Renaissance-Era France, a time when no-one could read Hieroglyphs and Egyptian Myth had passed into, well, myth.  So I'm going to go with the sentiment expressed by Dark and Sunflower that this is new-age, fluffy BS.

In terms of metaphysics it is possible that both the Egyptian Gods and the Tarot are expressions of, and inspired by, a single underlying Truth, but direct inspiration is, IMO, about as likely as Ice Cream raining from the sky tomorrow.

The examples on that page seem to suffer heavily from a confirmation bias. Ofcourse the woman with the lion is a bastardised version of Sekhmet, there could be no other explanation or symbolism to this 15th century french deck. :56:

Oh, the general lack of any actual historical relationship between the development of cartomancy and Egyptian religion in general, the tendency of Europeans to exoticise-fetishise things by ascribing them to Egypt even if they just made them up last week, and generalised frustration with people dumping their occultism in my religion and expecting me to give a shit.

The idea that the tarot was Egyptian was first known to be posited in 1781, later popularised by Crowley, and is - in Woldemar von Uxkull - of a piece with the whole Atlantis-and-mystical-power-of-pyramids flavor of what-would-eventually-evolve-into-newage crap.  While I don't entirely say "judge an idea by the company it keeps", any idea that hangs out with "The ancient Egyptians came from Atlantis!" in the classic literature does get a few downmarks.

More likely Italy, but you're close enough for a thread in the Kemetic SIG.

That said, I'm not at all sure this thread belongs in the SIG; there's not much to say about it from a Kemetic-centred POV beyond Darkhawk's initial response.  DH, how would you feel about it being moved to the Divination forum?
