If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

I had an irate customer refuse to leave the store today.

Why was he irate?
It is more often than not the case that dominance-asserting sociopaths rule over decent people, due to the more power-hungry nature of the former. That principle is demonstrated well by various internet forums. ...*ahem*

Why was he irate?

Because I told him I couldn't accurately match up his fuse without knowing the voltage and amperage, and that eyeballing it wasn't guaranteed to get him the right one. I offered to help him figure out which one it was, if he had a model number for the speaker kit he was fixing or if he could get me the old fuse. No idea why he snapped like that--it's a conversation I have with customers five or six times a week, and I've never had a customer get angry about it before. I mean, really, it's just a $2 fuse. I was just trying to save him from having to make an extra trip to exchange it.

Not that it matters, though. He showed me a gun and threatened to kill me, and I'm not the one to blame for that...am I?

Sounds like you offered good customer assistance and sometimes you need more info from the customer so you can help 'em properly.  More likely the guy was unstable.

Spider Man 3 never happened. And Epstein didn't kill himself.

That's the conclusion I've drawn.

The questions you asked are what I expect from a good technical sales person.

Now, I might get irate, but it would NOT be at the clerk. You'd be helping me, I'd be irate at myself or at life in general.  If you looked, acted, or gave any indication that you thought I was irate at You, I'd quickly explain that you were not the problem and that you were doing what was expected.

You did nothing wrong at all as far as I can tell.

I can't actually think of a legitimate situation in which a sales clerk could be threatened with a gun. Just sayin'.

I work in retail and one of the biggest perks is that it's all digital and online. I don't even have to talk to the customers anymore, just chat and I'm currently in a supervisory position so the ones I do talk to have already worked with an associate first.

Here's what I've learned in about twelve years of on again off again retail work. You meet the absolute best and absolute worst people and many of them are unstable or mentally ill. You are frequently expected to put your personal safety and comfort on hold 'because the customer is always right'.

Guess what? Sometimes the customer is unstable, violent, and abusive.

Your manager ought to be written up and suspended for taking such a cavalier attitude toward your safety. That's revolting behavior.

I called the supervisor later to complain. I asked if there was anything I could do to make myself safer, because I was afraid that if something like this happened again, I'd be dead before they got there. The supervisor's response? "Well, that's possible." So I'm scared to go back. My manager doesn't take it seriously enough to change the schedule so that I'm not there by myself for the entire morning every day that I work. I don't know what to do.

Sorry that happened mate. You honestly abided by the book, so even though it sucks, I think the next step is to evaluate the job and consider if it's worth it or not. In times like a recession, people are lucky enough to have jobs so it's like a catch 22.

I understand, I took on a 2nd job bartending at the weekends for a bit of cushion money, but it's in a rough area full of former IRA members. Even though I'm the barman I'm expected to act as a bouncer even though I don't have the proper license to be one. In just the last 2 months I've had to use force to put people out, and had a few pool sticks and pint glasses swung at me. one night when I hopped in the shower after it was just blood red going down the drain, and every night I'm off check around my car to see if anyone's waiting for me. It's at the stage that I'm going to use my own wages and take a weekend off to get that sia license to keep me right...but sometimes I think "Is the extra £6.50 an hour worth it?"

I mean you've already been threatened with a gun and saw that the police cannot be relied on. Now that situation may never happened again, but it's possible, and if so, is it worth it?

I get questions like those the time when I go to Alltex for electronic parts (especially weird cabling). That's one of the main reasons I go to Alltex -- extremely competent salespeople who know how to make sure I'm actually getting what I need and not just what I think I need (or what a client has told me is needed).

And no, I can't think of anything a sales person could do to a customer (short of attacking them or threatening to do so, of course) that would justify threatening them with a gun. From your description, you certainly did nothing to deserve that.

Yes, and yes.

So sorry to hear about that experience.
