My uncle is not well
« on: May 20, 2012, 11:37:04 am »
My late mother's only brother has been dx'ed with cancer. It's present in his lungs (no surprise there, he's smoked for decades), his pancreas, and his liver. Don't ask me how this went unnoticed for so long. Anyway--he has either an MRI or a CT scan coming up on Thursday the 24th, and he was told to bring his family along.

Dad was very calm when he told me last night, but I could hear the sorrow in his voice. I haven't told Kelley yet. She's got enough other stuff going on right now, and she's only met Uncle Ray twice. (He lives in TX, where he went after graduating from HS. He took a road trip with a friend and never came back. Married a local gal, all that good stuff.) I made sure I have current contact information for his two older daughters; the youngest one's a little bit on the outs with the rest of the clan, so I don't have info on her. When the time comes I'll probably ask the middle sister (who's the one I've always had more affinity for) if she has Mary's info.

His wife passed on a few years ago after a battle with Alzheimer's and numerous other issues. Dad told me last night that Ray had remarried last fall "to a woman he'd been seeing before your aunt even died." Well--I can't say I was surprised. Ray cuts quite a figure even as an octogenarian, and has a charming personality. He'd told us about his "ladyfriends at the home" many times. So--no, not surprised. Dad understood it, but he didn't approve of it. ::Shrugs:: Just more background, I guess, for anyone who feels they need it.

Anyway.

Uncle Ray's not doing well, and if you can spare a few good thoughts in his direction and those of his daughters (DFW area and Chicago IL), I'm sure they can use 'em.

Sheesh, as if you don't have enough on your plate already.

Seems weird writing those names since my wife and I are Karen and Ray:)

::cues the Twilight Zone theme  music:: :-)

Yeah, I know--never rains, pours, blah blah blah.

Thanks, everybody.  I told Kelley just the basics the other night and she took it pretty well. She's only met this uncle twice, so she doesn't have much connection to hiim except that he's her Nana's brother. She has a stronger tie to his middle daughter, whom we've seen a few more times (she's lived in Chicago for years, so more contact by virtue of location).

I'm ready for a break. Any time, now.
