Missing Cat -- Again
« on: October 10, 2013, 04:24:30 am »
I've posted about Mo (my Maine Coon cat) going missing.  He's done it again.

Because he sneaks out under my mother's walker when she and my dad are entering or leaving the house, and they don't even notice, there isn't anything we can do to keep him inside (that we've thought of or that works).  Lately, Mo has been getting out and staying out for several days to a week or so at a time, then coming back skinny, like he hasn't eaten.  We go out and call for him at all hours, and I check the porch every hour or so all night, hoping he'll be waiting to come back in.

This time, he's been out for 3 or 4 days, and the weather has turned rainy and chilly.  He must be so cold and wet!  I'm very worried about him.

He's not the brightest cat, but he's very sweet.

Any prayers for his safe (and speedy) return, or any "Go home, Mo!" energies would be great appreciated by the whole family.

Thank you.

Oh, Mo. You little dummy. *sigh*
I don't have him wet or freezing atm. More like he is lying under something like a porch?

I really can't think of why he is doing this all the freaking time. He likes it outside, obviously. But he is not able to really take care of himself. I don't think he has a concept of hunting at all.

Oh, Mo!  I'll send him some "Go home, silly boy" vibes.

Also - have you thought about a catio outside the front door?  Then he'd have a space to go, but there'd be a second door shut between him and the outside.

Ooops. Hit post too soon.

The way the porch is set up, there isn't really any way we can do anything to contain Mo any better.  We've tried to think of various options (and my husband us a carpenter, so he can build pretty much anything). But we haven't come up with anything workable yet. We've also tried ways of guarding the door when my parents leave the house, but that only works if there's someone else at home when they have to go out.

I just don't understand why Mo keeps going out -- he always looks so happy to get back into the house when he comes home.

Sigh.  I guess it's one of those situations where we have to accept that he's an individual being who has his own wants and needs.  He came to us as a feral originally, and wanted to join the family.  He eventually clawed a hole in our dining room window screen to get in.  Now he's decided he wants to go back out sometimes and he's very determined and sneaky.

I guess it's a lesson in accepting the fact that we can't control everything.

I know the feeling - my ferrets were forever trying to dodge outside and then losing it with wanting to get back in whenever they managed to make it.

Having a pet wandering loose is the worst. You're in my thoughts.

Ugh, I've got one of those too. Luckily mine freezes in panic as soon as he actually makes it outside. For the life of me I can't understand why he keeps bolting if he hates it out there so much.

If there isn't a good way to keep him from going out, have you thought about putting in a one-way cat door so he can let himself back in? Maybe the mood would strike him at four AM or something?

Hope he finds his way back soon!

I'm happy to report that Mo has returned.  Silly boy!

I'm beginning to suspect that he might have another family that he visits.  Which, if that's true, at least he's safe and fed when he's not home.  Sigh.

Thank you all!  I have no doubt that your thoughts and prayers helped to bring him home safely.
