For those who are wondering, I've been considering doing these all in a single post for a couple of years now, partly because I've found it difficult, both emotionally and logistically, to do three separate posts each on their proper days, and partly because the number of replies has dropped over the years (last year, none of the threads had replies).

Seeing all three at once just makes me sadder than usual -- and makes me think that spaceflight during the last week of January and the first week of February is a bad idea. Or at least launching and landing are bad ideas. I remember where I was and what I was doing when all three happened. :(

I recall hearing about Space Shuttle Challenger and her personnel in particular - I was just 11.  Words cannot express, in relation to all three tragedies.

Thanks for posting this. I am a science fan and a bit of a space buff. These people are my heroes (also remembering Sally Ride and others). I remember where I was when the Challenger accident happened. I was On Campus in the Dorms when I saw it on TV. I then went to my Chemistry Lab and announced it to people there who had not heard. A difficult day.

Thank you for posting this.

It's good to take a moment to remember that important scientific advances are often accompanied by great sacrifice, and to acknowledge those who made that sacrifice.

For contrast, I give you Apollo 14, launched on 31 Jan '71 - so it's not always a treacherous time of year.

I know. Or at least my mind knows. My gut, however, does not agree.  :-\
