Knee Issues
« on: November 07, 2014, 01:47:44 pm »
I've been having minor knee issues for about a year, but in the last few weeks, those issues have turned into something more serious.  At this point,  I'm in constant pain and not able to walk without serious swelling in the joint.  The good news is that I've managed to get through several hoops very quickly and am now under the care of a knee specialist/surgeon who is trying to get this resolved as quickly as possible.

Bad news: I'm caught in an insurance quagmire of prior authorizations and can't get to a point of getting approved for even the diagnostic imaging needed to determine the cause of the problem.  This means that I am sitting here spinning my wheels and cursing whoever came up with the idea of prior authorizations - may they spend an eternity in severe pain while jumping through a never-ending series of hoops, only to find out they weren't approved to have hoops in the first place.

So if anyone has any good energy, thoughts or prayers they can spare, I'd appreciate it - both for getting through the insurance roadblocks and for getting the knee issues fixed as quickly as possible.  Calming energy would also welcome, because my usual reaction to this much stress is to run or box it off, neither of which is an option.

Thanks all,
Aisling

PS I have found that when dealing with prior authorizations, those on the fist and second level of authorizations are not that concerned.  Going higher up they tend to respond better as far as getting me to think they care, (this may or may not translate into a quicker  answer.)

Noting new to report  but I wanted to say thank you to everyone who's responded.  I'll keep you posted if there are any major developments.  Fingers crossed that my next post will contain the words 'the diagnosis is...' and 'treatment has started.'

Thank you! You're not late at all, as I'm still dealing with this whole mess.  I have finally gotten the insurance to approve the imaging... hoping to a diagnosis by this time next week.  Fingers crossed!

An update: still no final diagnosis, in spite of ultrasounds, x-rays, and an MRI.  My current ortho doctor is '99% certain' that this is a benign condition but because it's 'complex and atypical', wants me to go to someone who is more specialized for the actual surgery.    The next stop is an orthopedic oncology surgeon, as soon as he can fit me into his schedule.  *sigh*

I did not know that orthopedic oncologists also deal with 'benign' conditions.  Hopefully there is one in your area and you don't have to go that far to see him.

Apparently this guy does and has a pretty good rep  in dealing with soft tissue problems of the knee. Unfortunately, there's no one that specialized in my corner of the world is so it'll be a road trip every visit.
