Going to India!
« on: May 10, 2012, 08:22:44 am »
Hey everybody,

I hate to disappear after ten-ish months of radio silence, but I'm going to India for three weeks. I recently graduated, but this is my actual last class: an intensive study abroad where we'll be learning about Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism in India (with two of the best professors I've ever had!). This is my first international travel since 2004, when I went to Ireland and the UK, and before that in the summer of 2001 when I visited Canada. I'm all vaccinated, getting ready to pack, and tomorrow I set off for Dulles for a gloriously long and cramped flight to Delhi. :D

I'd like to ask for any good thoughts, energy, and prayers for a safe and happy trip. I will literally take anything - literally! Last night I got blessed by a Franciscan friar, so I guess I'm good against demons for the next month or something. ;)

Love,
Sage
Maker, though the darkness comes upon me,
I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.
What you have created, no one can tear asunder.

That sounds lovely, I've been studying under an Ayurveda teacher for a few years now and I would love to see the markets she talks about.

Ireland is kinda amazing, not gonna lie. Where will you be going?

And thanks EVERYONE for the well wishes! :D I'll be in Delhi, Varanasi, Bodhgaya, and finally Hyderabad.

*hugs* You will have an amazing time! Wish we'd gotten a chance to Skype again before you left...I got too swamped with school and work. /sadface. We shall just have to Skype as soon as you're home. *nodnod*

Stay well and don't get eaten by a big snake or tiger or anything. Take pictures! And update Facebook once a week or something so we know you're alive.

Hi everybody! I'm not dead, just very, very busy and in a precarious wifi position. Right now I'm in Varanasi, one of the most holy cities in the entire country. This morning at the crack of dawn we were on the ghats by the Ganges River, watching hundreds of people perform morning devotions to Suriya, the sun, Mother Ganga, and Shiva, whose city this is. India has been an absolute assault on the senses, not all of it positive. I've had to adapt to the utter states of poverty and filth around the country, which I've been sheltered from as a middle class white American. A few nights ago we were in old Delhi, where I saw so many homeless and begging families on the streets. On the negative side of things, I also got heat exhaustion at the Taj Mahal (which btw isn't that impressive) and am experiencing some of the more interesting side effects of a native diet on a Western stomach.

On the positive side, I got to hang out in a Sufi tomb and listen to Qawwali music with a bunch of hijra (a "third gender" in India of males who present and identify as females) and in broken English we talked about transgender issues! And on the overnight train from Delhi to Varanasi, I had a ten year old tell me a good chunk of the Mahabharata in 30 minutes and one breath! And I'm getting really, really good at haggling with street vendors.

I am seriously ready for IHOP and McDonald's though, not gonna lie.
Maker, though the darkness comes upon me,
I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.
