Back Pain 2: Electric Boogaloo
« on: July 06, 2011, 12:10:08 pm »
So, I have a spinal fracture. No kidding. Orthopedic says: physical therapy, lose weight, make sure I'm properly informed before seeing a chiropractor. Yoga is a plus. I say: oh my gosh oh my gosh wtf is this I don't even.

So I start PT next Monday. My pain isn't even all that bad - mostly a 3 or 4 - but it's constant and, quite frankly, scary. Continuing love and cookies would be fantastic.
Maker, though the darkness comes upon me,
I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.
What you have created, no one can tear asunder.

Yikes! Lots of cookies and hugs for you. Hopefully you heal quickly without any lasting effects.

That's exactly what I'm hoping too. I'm too yooooung.. actually, the little kids visiting the orthopedic were too young for this sort of thing. :( I'm trying to keep a stiff upper lip and all that.

Augh. ((((Ellen))))

You are young; you've got to remember that this is in your favor. Take it easy, take it slow.

You're, as always, in my thoughts, but particularly now.

If you're amenable I'll do some Medicine Buddha mantra work for you. Otherwise, I'll use my standard-issue materials. ;)

I've never, ever thought of myself as particularly active or in shape my entire life, but when I'm limping around campus and having to /drive/ everywhere, and going to great lengths to avoid stairs... dangit. *hugs*

Oh, I'm ever so amenable to that. :) I had the Medicine Buddha's mantra in my head all morning.

Ouch. *sends cookies*

You certainly have my sympathy. I do know how that feels. I'm up to four vertebrae with compression fractures so far (caused by significant osteoporosis)

The physical therapy can help quite a bit. It helped me some. I don't go any more since we lost our insurance, but if you have a good PT and do what they say, it can help.

Feel better!

{{{Ellen}}}  Prayers going out for you!

See if your PT will give you an aquatics program to do as well.  I used to teach two "Healthy Back" water exercise classes and my ladies swore it helped...and the water will lessen the impact as well.

((((Ellen)))) I'm not surprised you find it scary, spinal fracture sounds terrifying. I hope the PT helps you.

What can I expect from physical therapy, since you have spinal problems too?

Thank you for the prayers! And man, I've been wanting an excuse to go back in the pool... I haven't been swimming in at least half a decade. :(

It depends on the therapist and your situation. I've been to a few and some are more thorough.

They'll probably start you off slow and also give you exercise to do at home daily.

The best was my last. Generally, the PT involved exercise to strengthen the muscles in the back to support the spine, stretching for flexibility, and heat/electro stimulation.

Usually, I went in and started with lots of different stretching. Some on a table with a big ball. Then I had to do either an exercise bike or elliptical trainer for a predetermined amount of time. From there I had a bunch of strength exercises to do with rubber bands.

Last thing was my favorite :) Laying on heat packs while receiving electrical stimulation for 20 minutes. If you've never had the electro stim before it takes a little getting used to, but it helped me a lot.

All in all, each session was around 1 1/2 hours to complete, but mine was a good 1/2 hour longer because I had to work on a lower back compression fracture and a herniated disc in the neck at the same time.

The last round of therapy was 12 weeks 3 times per week.
