My father is about to find himself unemployed for the second time in 18 months. He's a science teacher with 22 years' worth of experience, and one would think that schools aren't exactly closing one after another, right?

Well, right, but it seems that an experienced teacher now is considered 'overqualified', and schools would much rather hire someone younger, fresher, and cheaper. :mad:

I don't know how many applications he's sent out (my guess is a lot, but he doesn't want me to know too much and worry accordingly), and he wouldn't mind moving wherever a position demanded him to go, which is a big thing after 21 years in the same area. But he still hasn't as much as been called to an interview, and time is running out.

A word in whatever ear you may have would be much appreciated.

Many thanks to all of you; he has been asked to do supply for the same school he's been working in. (That means filling in for other absent teachers, to you unfamiliar with the British school system.) It pays much better than a permanent position, but naturally it depends entirely on demand. Though he suspects that he will be getting a lot of demand for a while, as a terminally ill colleague will be dropping out without much warning and he will be needed to cover for her full time until a permanent replacement is found. It is not the best arrangement, but we will be kept afloat until he gets something more secure.
