Taxes, that's what we need more taxes! Didn't we start a revolution over taxes hmmm, just a thought. How about the government stop spending so much money on stupid programs that don't work and stop sending aid to countries that hate our guts!

Er. At the risk of igniting one of those matchsticks... do you make over $1 million a year? Cause that's who will be taxed, if passed: the ones who make over $1 million a year.

It was the "haves, and have mores" that did not want to pay taxes.  The average working man understood, the guys with the big sticks wanted a piece of their action.

Some of the programs work, some don't.  The question is what were those programs designed to do?  (Help the people, or get someone reelected?)

:ange: We have such a lovable government, that we have to pay people to hate it!

Exactly! If we could get passed the political bull crap, we could probably do a lot of good for people and probably be a more united country.

Actually, no.  We started a revolution to ensure we had the rights of Englishmen which meant representation in Parliament and / or we'd collect taxes and spend them in the Colonies. basically Dominion status.

Ah yes, the Buffett rule meaning that Buffett would not have to pay more taxes since the remaining deduction would be charity, ie Warren's donations to the Gates Foundation.

Btw, the average effective rate for families making over $1 million a year is close to 25% plus a bit or for top 1% it is about 29%.
http://www.downsizinggovernment.org/warren-buffett%E2%80%99s-tax-story-bogus

Now the top 0.1% (about 400 people / families) is about 18%. so, you'd have to have a second alternative tax system to catch those 400 people.

Would the donations the to charity have any oversight, requirements (and which charities)?

I know, I was just spouting off at the mouth! I do that from time to time. Yes it was that we had no representation, and they were collecting taxes with us having no say as to where the money went or what for.

To be fair, those taxes were enacted to pay off the debt for a war that the colonists provoked.

No, we started a revolution over lack of representation in parliament. We were being taxed by parliament but were not allowed to elect any MPs to represent our views. The US Revelution was not over not liking taxes or even wanting lower taxes, it was over the fact that we were expected to pay taxes without any say in the government imposing those taxes.  The cry wasn't "No taxation!" or "Lower taxes!" but "No taxation without representation!"

Of course, I've heard the view that we really didn't want representation, because then we would really have no control over the what mother england did to us.
