What happens after the election?

So, to clarify, I'm not American and I've not been involved in any of the recent protests nor even have to live with the difficulties faced by the people who are.

I do have a question, or maybe a thought/concern, however.
When the US election is over ( whoever wins ) will the support for, much needed, change suddenly dry up as people become accepting of the status quo or hold onto the belief that all will suddenly be ok simply because of a change of leader?
I ask because I can see getting Trump out will save more damage but also that it could end up being wallpaper over cracks. The same way I feel like changing rules but not people's opinions/feelings makes things look better but leaves the wound festering.

It feels like an important thing to ask and talk about.
