Wannabe dictator struck with plague he casually dismissed
« on: October 02, 2020, 04:24:57 am »
As the title says, Donald Trump claims he and his wife Melania have tested positive for coronavirus. Obviously this has massive political ramifications.

He and Melania could be asymptomatic, recover without issue, and become even more of a hero to his base, who believe COVID-19 is no threat at all. He could be fine but Melania could get very sick and then recover, or vice versa. One or both of them could die.

In any case, it eats up a chunk of time before the US election with worries about our glorious leader contracting the plague.

Do these happenings have a place in your faith and magical workings about the world today? I must admit this reminds me that Hashem is a plague god.

It was a dud when it hit Bolsonaro and Johnson so I'm not putting too much hopes on it bringing down Trump.

Yeah, it's important to remember that, of course, these people are going to have much, much better care than most of their populace.

Yes, what interesting timing for that to allegedly happen.

Do these happenings have a place in your faith and magical workings about the world today?

I have been thinking about it, but I'm not sure what I am in a position to do at this point.

(Plus I have some personal life stuff sapping all my energy right now, unfortunately (including a potentially precarious housing situation  :().)

Seriously? Casually dismissed? Plague? With a recovery rate of well >99%, and a US death toll of .06%? A plague the CDC lists as an “outbreak” https://www.cdc.gov/outbreaks/?fbclid=IwAR2GgY3Y7KePWgWVenxnUXMCZZgcCUvezt7Q8thvr-QKWLvuO1pmoD1uIGI  along with salmonella from pet bearded dragons, onions and peaches?

After  Trump in January declared a “humanitarian and security crisis" during a  primetime Oval Office address, Sen. Chuck Schumer, speaking beside  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said Trump was working to “manufacture a  crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his  administration." Party leader Tom Perez also called it “manufactured.”  Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., described it as a "'crisis' that  doesn't exist."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted at the time that "we're not falling" for the "fake crisis."

Jan  14 - the WHO (World Health Organization) sent out a tweet declaring  that there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the COVID-19  virus.

Jan 24 - Dr. Anthony Fauci  National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director  said - “ Covid 19 It isn't something the American public needs to worry  about or be frightened about, because we have ways of preparing and  screening of. It's a very, very low risk to the United States, but it's  something that we as public health officials need to take very  seriously,"

On January 29, 2020 Joe Biden in a speech in Iowa said that Trump's idea of restricting travel from China was "Xenophobic".

January 30, WHO calls corona virus a healthcare emergency.

February  2 - New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot, “The risk to  New Yorkers for Coronavirus is low and our preparedness as a city is  very high. There is no reason not to take the subway, not to take the  bus, not to go out to your favorite restaurant, and certainly not to  miss the parade next Sunday. I’m going to be there.”

February  24, 2020 Nancy Pelosi says from San Francisco's China Town to come  visit, it is safe and "there are no Coronavirus concerns". Then SF  became one of the epicenters of the disease.

Bill DiBlasio 03/2/20 “ I’m encouraging New Yorkers to go on with your lives. Get out on the town despite Coronavirus.”

On  March 9, 2020 Bernie Sanders said he would NOT, I repeat he said he  would NOT shut down travel from March 20, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow (as well  as NY Times) bash Trump for talking about Hydroxy Cloroquin calling it a  "fairy tale" and giving people false hope. Now it is being sought after  to fight the disease and is being tested as helping patients recover  faster.

January 24 2020, Joe  Scarborough and wife Minka had a segment where they said "no Americans  need to be concerned about COVID-19 and should be more concerned about  the common flu.

March 30, 2020 Morning Joe anchors say "everyone saw this coming in early January.Summary of Corona Events

Summary of Corona Events

If I may ask for a link to where you got this summary please.

I can link here  ( https://www.who.int/news-room/detail/27-04-2020-who-timeline---covid-19 , https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/interactive-timeline#! ) two timelines from WHO on their dealings with Covid.
In regards of the WHO page you cited I might suggest that given the US hasn't had anything more threatening than selmonella outbreaks in the years leading up to this that it would seem more important and worrying that a larger and more powerful outbreak should suddenly occur.

In regards the other responses you quote, it strikes me that, that may suggest the need for better senators rather than to assume a strong response from the President.
It would be more useful, to my mind, to compare his response to that of other world leaders/countries.

I can't offer you a timeline right now but our ( UK ) current response is to limit the numbers in groups, make it law to wear masks in enclosed spaces, giving distance between individuals, isolating if you have symptoms until you can be tested etc (  https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus ).

In fairness I should add that, from this site ( https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/prevention.html ) it would appear that the US current advice is similar to ours ( although our limit for groups is 6 rather than 10 people, and face mask wearing is law rather than advice ), however this also doesn't give more details on earlier response.

I should also point out that the NHS and our ( UK ) governments furlough, business support and ( more recently ) low income isolation support schemes  ( https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus/worker-support?priority-taxon=774cee22-d896-44c1-a611-e3109cce8eae ), though late to start, will have been of some help for those struggling. I'm not sure what the US level of support is as I'm finding it hard to navigate the site (https://www.usa.gov/coronavirus ).

I guess 1 death is a tragedy, but 210,000 is a statistic.

(Also note that those stats are *with* lockdowns ordered by state and city governments, massive effort by health care workers and medical equipment manufacturers, and most private citizens taking steps to avoid potentially harming others. None of these people waited for instructions from the President before taking action. Who knows what would have happened if they had.)

Also on that list - a disease in guppies, and lung problems caused by vaping, which isn't even a contagious disease. It's almost as if the term 'outbreak' is broad and doesn't specify the magnitude or nature of the issue.

Politicians and media pundits fail to accurately predict future, news at 11.

Same with scientists changing their stance based on new data.

I vaguely remember March. And I think *everyone* was expecting/hoping Covid would be as easily contained as SARS was. The vast majority of public figures changed what they were saying as the circumstances changed, which is what one would normally expect. I'm not sure what you're trying to say with this post.

My hope is that the Washington outbreak, which can largely be traced to the Amy Coney Barrett nomination super spreader event, will ironically prevent Senators from being able to meet to confirm Amy Coney Barrett. A slender hope, for sure, but a boy can dream!

Yeah, no. Not quoting that.

Since you didn't bother to give a citation for any of that hot mess...I had a look around for where it might have originated.

Oh look...it's a post from the Trump subreddit that you copied in its entirety.

Color me incredibly unimpressed.

Yet another worry is that he's gone from 'recovering' from Covid straight into talking at a rally without a mask ( gulp ) - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-us-2020-54493575 .
Can we spell idiot? I say this as, reading the page to the bottom it seems he held this on the 10 day mark from diagnosis while the CDC is recomending a minimum of 10 days isolation ( possibly up to 20. Links are included on the page I cited ).

Im not sure what views are right now on the independence or any bias of the BBC but I feel they're still solid for the most part. As such I will also quote part of the page I linked to -  "Mr Trump said that the coronavirus was "disappearing". Shortly before he made his speech, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 58,302 new cases in the past 24 hours."

Of course the problem is it's easier to sell lies and ignore safety to gain support.
