If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Heathen NYC Councilmember Arrested on Corruption Charges
« on: April 02, 2013, 11:10:45 am »
This just gets weirder and weirder. I remember some discussion here at the Cauldron a while back about Dan Halloran, a Theodish heathen and supposedly the first openly heathen person elected to office in the U.S. when he won a seat on the New York City Council. This morning, he was arrested along with several others in a corruption scheme that involved bribing officials to buy the Republican nomination in our upcoming NYC mayoral election for a turncoat Democratic state senator (whom I despise, so I'm cheering at his downfall).

Here's the latest:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/03/nyregion/state-senator-and-city-councilman-accused-of-trying-to-rig-mayors-race.html?hp&_r=0

Does anybody have insight on this guy? There's this Village Voice article from a while back, but its snarky tone about heathenism in the first few paragraphs I've read give me pause (then again, a snarky tone about *everything* is a Village Voice hallmark):

This is the first I've heard of it. I don't have much insight to offer, just my silly opinion. I have to be honest, my first thought was, "I wonder if this is some kind of political mud-slinging?" I imagine an outed heathen makes himself quite the target for that sort of thing. Hard to say, though.

I don't know him personally, but from my association with Asatru, I do know several people who knew him well and had a lot of respect for him. He was actively involved with the Troth, and sat on one of the boards.

I will be interested to see how this plays out

I'm not sure his religion had anything to do with this. Although I am sure the media will play it up, while ignoring the religion(s) of the others involved.

Sadly, I am not surprised when any politician turns out to be crooked any more -- party, religion, etc., never seem to matter.

To be honest, the only things I've heard outside of The Wild Hunt announcing that he existed have not been so positive. They seemed to mostly revolve around him getting his right to call himself Theodish revoked because he broke some of their laws, continued to do so in the future despite this (until, I presume, he was called out for it? because now I only seem him referred to as a heathen), and then threw other heathens under the bus when he became more popular politically.

The heathens I converse with on a regular basis don't think very highly of him; and personally, I'm not very surprised.

I thought being crooked (as well as a liar and sociopath) were always prerequisites for entering politics?

I'm not quite that cynical -- somewhat surprisingly.  Close, however.

I didn't mean to imply that his heathenism was related to his corruption. I was more focused on how he seems to have a penchant for landing himself in controversy--whether that's in heathenism, as others here (and the Voice article) have suggested, or now in his political career.

If there's a common thread between them, it seems to be that his personal ambitions and sense of self-importance override any commitment to principle. But that opinion is just gleaned from a quick reading of today's headlines and a half-remembered thread about him here from some time ago. I figured maybe some heathens here had more informed opinions.

Mostly, it's just unfortunate that most visible heathen to date has had such a spectacular downfall.

BTW, so far the coverage I've seen here in NYC--where this is a huge news story--hasn't touched on Halloran's heathenism in the slightest. I don't know if that's because the spotlight has largely been on the Democratic state senator at the center of the case, or because Halloran has repudiated/distanced himself from heathenism so much, or because reporters actually get that his religion has nothing to do with it and are taking the high road.

(Considering that one of our local tabloid newspapers is the unwholesome NY Post, I'd be surprised if the latter is the reason in all cases.)

I don't know anything about him that I didn't get from The Wild Hunt, but unsurprisingly TWH has had quite a bit about him, including a detailed account of how he got into the bad books of the Theodists.  I'll link you to TWH's article about his arrest, from which you can follow links to other pertinent articles - TWH also has a tag for him, but since it includes every post in which he's been mentioned even briefly, there's more to dig through before getting to the meat.

Your opinion seems pretty accurate to what I've seen, though.

I'm amazed at how far he got being so open.  Too bad he had to go and blow it, indeed!

Thanks, Sunflower. I'm looking forward to reading TWH's take.
