Three New Facts About the Tea Party
« on: May 02, 2013, 08:36:36 pm »
Quote
The first large-scale political-science survey of Tea Party activists  shows the movement isn't going anywhere—and the GOP had better brace  itself.
....
1. Tea Party activists are not Republicans.
....
2. Tea Party activists aren’t nearly as concerned about winning.
....
3. Attempts to bridge the gap between establishment Republicans and the Tea Party are doomed to fail.
....

Any new movement will have fanatics that found it.  Fanatics are more obsessed with Purity than anything else and come together against a common 'enemy'.  The results are not surprising and I would think any larger scale new organization would have similar results along these lines (I'm thinking of Occupy).  Being more concerned with getting what they think is right rather than compromising.

Still the Tea Party is an 'acceptable target' because of how abhorent that people see their behavior and goals as.

Point 2 is interesting.  What some would call fanaticism others would call standing on principle.

Politics in a democracy, however, requires compromise. Standing on principle (on almost everything) at best achieves gridlock (and only until the majority gets fed up and votes enough of the "no compromise" ever people out).

Fanatics need one-party rule (at a minimum) to avoid the need to compromise to get anything done. Karl Rove did try to get a form of near-permanent one (minority) party rule but he failed because the majority will only take so much abuse before they actually vote and vote their own interests. If the Tea Party manages to keep effective control Republican party, all they will do is ensure Democratic super-majorities in both houses of Congress by 2020. After all, Rove's Neo-Con agenda was much more acceptable to the majority than the Tea Party agenda, yet Rove and friends failed to accomplish it.

It's also interesting reading the comments.  There is a lot of 'The people that were surveyed weren't actually Tea Party people' there...Granted, it just reinforces the purity requirement.

I try not to read comments on political articles as they usually just give me a headache.

True.  Though it does have sort of the train wreck thing.   You know you shouldn't look, but you do anyways.

Granted, any article will have the same comments on them.  Doesn't have to be a political one.

The comments on the political ones are generally so predictable -- at least they have been the past 6-8 years.
