I’m conflicted.

On the one hand, my loathing for Justin Trudeau is as deep as the ocean. Therefore I take a bitter little joy in this controversy, as once again the Revolution devours one of her children.

On the other hand I sympathise with him. Unlike, say, the blackface controversies in this merry Old Dominion age is no excuse — at 30 a little more discretion is to be expected. Even so, his offence is a mild and piddling one and certainly no legitimate reason to ruin his career, as it very well may. Trudeau should be measured by his deeds in office rather than past transgressions. That’s only just. By that metric the Trudeau government has proven itself a loyal standard-bearer of the same liberal cosmopolitanism which is currently tearing open his innards, and I can only wonder whether it’s so wise to bite the hand that feeds.

I mean, the only attention I pay to politics is half-listening to the lunchtime news, and I've known for a while that Trudeau's public image is *very* carefully curated and not much more than skin deep. But ... that's a skill I *want* to see in a federal politician. Of course he's a scoundrel; they all are. At least Trudeau is competent.

(Scheer has all the subtlety of a cartoon villain; Singh is OK, I guess, though his party has had similar trouble with social media sins. May ... is giving it a good shot, but I've heard a bit too much 'more Left than thou' talk. I'mma look at my local candidates before decding.)

This. (Though I really like my incumbent Liberal MP, and I'd like to keep him if possible even if the party doesn't form the next government.)

And I doubt this is a matter of 'the Revolution devouring her own' (as Castus puts it, though the Canadian Liberal party is not now nor has it ever been a vehicle of 'the Revolution'); it smacks more to me of political opponents digging up things from many years ago that they think will cause The Monolithic Left (hint: we're not monolithic) to devour Justin. I doubt that people who identify specifically with the Liberal Party and/or the centre-left will do so; they're not much given to devouring. Those farther to the left than that might.
