SSM News: Gay is OK in KY
« on: July 01, 2014, 07:25:33 pm »
Gay folks can now get married, watch the Derby, and sip authentic mint juleps.  All in the same state.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/01/kentucky-gay-marriage_n_5548179.html?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000013

From the article:
Quote
[US District Judge John G] Heyburn criticized Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear (D) for arguing that the ban preserves the state's birth rate and therefore contributes to Kentucky's economic stability.

No, because that's hilariously stupid. I'm honestly surprised to see this come out of Kentucky, as I am whenever SSM is legalised in the South, which isn't too often. I'm sure my former friends in the Southern nationalist movement are screaming their heads off ^.^

Also, I hope to see many fabulous hats at the Derby next year...

Believe me, they are (but IIRC, they're still screaming about a certain sports team possibly having to change its racist name) and it is sooooo satisfying.

The Derby has fabulous hats?  Shows what I know about horse racing, but how do they get them to stay on the horses' heads?

Well, first, the decision is stayed, as it is in so many states where the ruling has been in favor of marriage equality. So no, gay or lesbian folks won't be getting married anytime soon in KY.

But second, this decision has produced some beautiful quotes:

"In America, even sincere and long-held religious beliefs do not trump the constitutional rights of those who happen to have been out-voted"
--U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn II, in his ruling today striking down Kentucky's ban on same-sex marriage

Also, in response to KY's sole defense of the ban--that traditional marriages contribute to a stable birth rate and the state's long-term economic stability--the judge said, "These arguments are not those of serious people."

Love it!
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

No, but the governor is partially right.  A stable to growing population is needed in the long term; SSM is definitely not the problem, and it might even be part of the solution.

OK, as diametrically opposed as you and I usually are, it really weirds me out to agree with you so strongly, but to me it seems obvious. If a same-sex couple wants to marry and have kids, they'll prefer to marry and have kids where they'll actually have the rights of a married couple with kids. Kind of like, you know, any other couple would.

To clarify: Sailor, that wasn't a "well, duh," at you. I'm just completely baffled at how that wouldn't make sense to the government officials involved.

Yep, because straight parents never raise fucked-up kids ever.

Given the rest of the sentence, probably not.  More likely, in context, the idea that gay people don't have kids.  Sorry, lesbians can relatively easily have kids; gay men can adopt.

Although I do have a stat question about that. I was under the impression that gay men were willing to adopt slightly older kids from the foster care system, more so than straight couples.  Is this that gays are at the bottom of the list for babies or are they more willing to take older kids now rather than wait or adopt foreign kids.  (kind of awkwardly worded question, so I'll probably end up having to expand it in response to comments)

I just want to point out that it isn't unheard of for gay men to have biological children. My sister and I exist, as does my own son who's bio-dad is also gay. So, no matter how you look at it, their argument doesn't hold up.

The former, I would guess. But that's just a guess.

Bio-dad?  Not sure that's really adding to your point about my too broad a generalization.  I'd also exclude from the category for counting purposes men who were married to the woman who gave birth to the kids.

While obviously not conclusive, I'm not out in far right field then.

That is a point in favor of Tea Party small govt / lower taxes supporting SSM.  Ack, was it this article or another one that was talking about the class-money-marriage divide?

Either way, same-sex couples, in this case probably mostly men, adopting harder to place kids (ie mostly older) is a double good for society & lower taxes folk.  The state doesn't have to take care of the kids, and given the overall results of to many foster care systems (from limited knowledge though on my part) the results are going to be kids who end up being better educated, more likely to succeed in life.

It was a bad argument - the governor was trying to argue about practical effects, but the effects he was mentioning are likely to be the opposite.

Yes. As in, biological father. He did contribute to making a baby...

Why? People get married, have kids, get divorced and remarried then have more kids all the time. What's the difference if the second marriage happens to be a same sex marriage? They can still have kids if they choose. There are a lot of options.

I do think that either you missed my point, or I wasn't clear. My point was that the whole "oh no the human population is in danger because of gay marriage" bullshit is just that, bullshit. It simply doesn't hold up for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons, is that gay men make babies too.
