Except, you know, for the many reasons someone might prefer being in the USAF, not to mention that most people who have been in the military or are currently there really recommend that new recruits go for the USAF, as it is one of the better branches.

AKA, one of the easier branches. The AF is said to be, rather ironically now, the one branch where being a soldier is more like being a civilian.

Quote
People in the USAF get extra pay if they end up on an Army base, as compensation for the difference in quality and space. And that's just barely beginning to touch on the issue...

*Laughs* No, that's a rumor probably started by good old branch rivalry. :)

The branch ranks all make the same pay. However, a single E-5 will get less COLA than an E-5 with dependents. And the DoD offers a compensation to all service wo/men who live in inadequate housing for their rank/dependents, as well as any per diem pay when on TDY (Temporary Duty Assignment).
The pace of progress in artificial intelligence (I’m not referring to narrow AI) is incredibly fast. [...] The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most.--Elon Musk

I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence," [Bill] Gates wrote. "First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

Nor for you. The meanings of words are defined by the society which uses them.

That's why we have an "official definition" for "Pagan religion" here at TC -- so we are all on the same page. That definition is "a religion that this not Christian, Jewish, or Islam and self-identifies as Pagan." Belief in a deities (or multiple deities) is not required.

Yup, effective immediately. No surprise there, when something is that blatantly unconstitutional.

The Air Force will now allow airmen to omit ‘so help me God’ from enlistment oaths

from the article:

"The issue drew attention to a previously unnoticed rule change: The rules governing the Air Force’s enlistment oaths used to include a note stating that “Airmen may omit the words ‘so help me God,’ if desired for personal reasons.” That exception quietly disappeared in October 2013, after which the Air Force required the inclusion of the full oath for any enlistment or reenlistment."

Christianists at work behind the scenes. It creeps me out.

Sadly, that's how they've been working for years. While the Falwells and Robertsons hog the attention, they work quietly out of sight and hopefully (at least from their POV) completely out of mind.

I suspect they only changed their minds because they got caught. I wish I thought otherwise, but given the influence extremist Christian fundamentalists have had over the USAF, I really can't given them the benefit of the doubt.

I'm actually quite surprised at this whole thing now. I'd talked to another of my military friends who's in the Air Force, and he said there was no "requirement" to swear to God when he enlisted. But that was back in 2009/2010, so maybe that's why?

The change to require the "so help me God" phrasing was only made about a year ago.
