Uh. Not San Antonio. Over half the population is Hispanic.

Also, just want to be a brat and say that Texas is not a bad state: there are unfortunately a lot of people who give it a bad name. Most of them live in the north or in the east parts of Texas. Go south, go central, go west, and you may be surprised.

*gets off soapbox* Yes, I am a native Texan, why do you ask?

I'm in Houston right now, I usually hang out in the Montrose are which is the "gay" area of the city. Inside the city I generally have no issues, it's when I go on camping excursions and sight-seeing I encounter such people. I do like Texas though, the scenery is wonderful, and very diverse.

In this country and many others, yes, Christianity is the culprit--specifically, conservative Christianity. But go overseas, and you'll find other conservative religions are just as busy going after us.

Because your average Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem is a safe place to be openly queer?

Yes, they won't try and kill you. Nor force a sex change operation on you as an alternative to the death penalty.

Well, I'd have to look, but I have a Texas one and a San antonio one and the San Antonio one is the main one I've been reading.

No, you're right, it's just the scary Muslims doing it.

That's Iran.  I doubt you could find a hospital standing in Gaza that could hope to perform such a procedure.

I forgot to add, in case of the counter-argument that those are just a couple of unbalanced individuals, that they are hardly alone:

Haredim are hardly gay-friendly even in Brooklyn, but they certainly get away with more in Israel.  It's not like we of the Tribe can do no wrong here, I'm saying.

And note the police came and kept the ultra-orthodox from stopping the parade a few days later.

While it is a significant percentage of Israeli Jews who protest and have to be restrained by the Israeli police, they are restrained.

However, I bet if they had the political power like the conservatives do in many Muslim countries, that the parade would have been stopped and possibly worse things would happen to homosexuals.

Randall or Lyric can address this far better than I, but Texas is BAD. Really, really bad.

I shudder to think it, if you're judging the whole of the U.S. by Texas!

I can safely say that I don't judge the US by the fundamentalists. That's like someone judging the UK by the BNP! I just feel very sorry for all the people who are struggling for the right to be with whom so ever they want to be with.

One need not leave Christianity out of the "going after gays with weapons to kill" category; see Uganda, Jamaica...
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I hear good, tolerant things about Austin as well.

Sorry, Finn, but San Antonio and Austin notwithstanding, your native state scares the living daylights out of me. As a black gay pagan, I won't set foot in it; for any one of those "offenses," I could end up being dragged behind a truck to my death, let alone for all three.

(And in fairness, I should note that it's not like racist, homophobic, antipagan evildoing doesn't go down in my own home state of NY; but here, at least it tends to draw the general condemnation of both government and society at large.)

Given 1800 years of theology and history, unlikely.
