According to Newt, I guess that's right.  According to one of Newt's ex-wives, he wasn't really that in favor of just one woman, however.

But according to him, we shouldn't talk about that, it's not important, she's lying anyway and so on.  But if he wasn't such a 'family values' candidate, I wouldn't worry so much about the open marriage business or the divorces, (the ditching your wife when she's sick is a different matter entirely).  But from a 'family values' candidate, particularly ones that want to make divorce harder or mess with other peoples marriages, they'd better be pristine in their own.  There shouldn't be any grounds for even thinking her accusation might be true.

As I said elsewhere: So, if paganism causes teh gheyz does that mean Lesbians spring from the ground I tread? Because that would be problematic.

I find this entire thread despicable. The fact that in a serious presidential contest you people would focus your attention on that kind of trash is indicative of everything that's wrong with the Internet, and it's the reason it's become so hard to get good candidates like Gingrich to subject themselves to the process. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Outrageous.

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I pine for Jimmy Carter and his adultery in his heart.  If only other candidates could match his example and confine their adultery to their heart alone.

I'm astonished that so many Christian fundamentalists have aligned behind Gingrich's candidacy. On his personal track record alone, you couldn't find a worse standard bearer of "family values" if you tried.

No shit.
I've scratched my head over the very same conundrum.
Oh, is it time again to say "Fuck Trump gently in the ear with a swarm of pissed-off hornets?"?

Okay. Fuck Trump gently in the ear with a swarm of pissed-off hornets.

I believe they feel is "pro fundamentalist Christian family values" public statements and his willingness to enforce them by law are far more important than what he actually does in his personal life.

Considering that same group mostly considers Gingrich to be pagan for having converted to Catholicism, not surprising.

True. IMHO, the level of hypocrisy among the ministers and other leaders of US Fundamentalist Christianity is very high. Perhaps even higher than among politicians (of all parties).

I wish I could remember the analysis that a friend of mine put forward on this subject, but it's an interesting one.  I will reconstruct it a bit:

"All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."  - Romans 3:23

The axiom is that everyone fails to fully enact these values.  The important thing is thus not success, because success is defined as impossible; it is to continue to promote, strive, and act as if those values are the appropriate ones.

Thus, failure is forgivable; failure is expected.  The adulterer who knows that they have failed, who is contrite and at least talks a line about doing better, is still upholding the idea that the behaviour is a problem.  The person who suggests an honest open relationship, on the other hand, is no longer trying to succeed at the "correct values"; they are acting as if "incorrect values" are normal and ought to be treated as acceptable.  It is one thing to fail, but it is entirely something else to not try.

Which is how you get situations where serial cheaters are lauded for promoting family values and it's better to abuse queer people than consider it okay to be gay.  Because nobody can succeed at the valueset by definition, it becomes about how hard you push the valueset, not whether or not you live it.

Yeah, well, but then the adulterer shouldn't be so loud and downright spiteful about other sinners. That Romans verse should be read with he who is without sin and all that.

Have to partially disagree.

When the other sinners admit that it is a sin, they too can be forgiven.  In some ways it's not the act that is major ideological problem, but saying the act is acceptable.

They don't expect perfection, they expect people to fail. So long as they admit failure, and claim they are going to do better, and take at least some symbolic steps in that direction they are welcome back in the fold.

This is utterly unrelated to my point. I am saying Sinner A should not be condemning Sinner B so loudly because he, too, has sinned. The fact that Sinner A is theoretically welcome back in the fold and Sinner B is not is irrelevant. At that point in time, they are both sinners.
