To me the biggest thing holding Sanders back is the media focus on Clinton. I've volunteered with the local campaign. I talk to people on a regular basis who haven't participated in the political circus before but now feel like they've got a chance. I've even heard of fundies willing to vote for a pro-choice, pro-gay candidate because in his rhetoric about feeding the hungry and taking care of the poor, they hear the words of Jesus echoed. The most powerful thing keeping Sanders from the nomination is that people keep saying he won't win. He could if the people who say they're going to vote against him for strategic reasons would get behind him!

I agree completely with you. I also remember that is is what was said of Obama at this point in the campaign eight years ago. He's not electable as too many people would not vote for a black. Now it's too many people would not vote for a socialist.

No one screams about Sanders religion. Just the socialism (which most of the screamers seem to think is another word for communist).  Of course, if he wins the Democratic nomination, I expect some of the more obnoxious Fundie Christian TV/radio preachers to hate on the fact that he's a Jew. Worse, he's a Jew who apparently likes the current Pope -- that's two religious strikes against him from the Fundie POV. ::rolling eyes::
