Black Student Can't Be Valedictorian
« on: July 25, 2011, 07:17:15 pm »
(I know there was another thread like this a year or so ago. Just can't remember where the school was.)

Black Student Can't Be Valedictorian

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AR) - A high school southeast of Little Rock would not let a black student be valedictorian though she had the highest grade-point average, and wouldn't let her mom speak to the school board about it until graduation had passed, the graduate claims in Federal Court

The one last time had the position being rotating...Black one year, White the next, etc.  I believe it had to do with student body president though.

I think that one was on class president.

Assuming the claims in the article are basically true, this school district is going to be in a lot of legal hot water.

Different school.  The school last year had an every other year policy for school officers. One school year the President would be Black and VP white; next year it was reversed. Same for some other lower officers. It became an issue when a student who was half white and half black wanted to run. Would be interesting to see in a few years if they have had any black officers.

This one is out right discrimination.

And this school should be in hot water, presuming the family can prove it. Sounds like a free ride in college for the student.

BUt they were actually trying to make sure that blacks got positions on the council, it's just the way they handled it when a mixed race child showed up that really got them in hot water.

Black Student Can't Be Valedictorian

That school district is going to bleed $$$$$ in that lawsuit. As they should.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I tend to think of Arkansas as being relatively untouched by the loony crap you see in the deep south, then something like this comes up.

That one of course was discrimination as well - disallowing people from certain positions based on skin color is racist and discriminatory, it's not that complicated.

That it was. Very likely discriminatory against the white students, but very expensive for the school to fight.
