Another Same-Sex Marriage Win
« on: February 22, 2012, 06:42:36 pm »
The winning streak continues:

Another court finds Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional

"Another federal judge has found unconstitutional a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law which forbids providing federal government benefits to same-sex spouses."

http://www.politico.com/blogs/under-the-radar/2012/02/another-court-finds-defense-of-marriage-act-unconstitutional-115243.html

"Another" because there was a similar ruling from a judge in Boston a while back, if I remember correctly. These DOMA legal challenges--seeking to overturn parts of the federal law that denies recognition by the fed gov't of same-sex marriages--is not to be confused with the California-specific Prop 8 case.

Which we're also winning.

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Even a judge appointed by Bush can see the problems with this act.

Love it!

I also love that Maryland's senate, as expected, passed their marriage bill today. It now goes to their governor for his signature (he's a same-sex marriage advocate, so it's a foregone conclusion).

Maryland will shortly become Marriage Equality State #8. A ballot referendum to try to repeal it is a virtual certainty. Stay tuned...

on a side comment, now that they can get married, they get to have the down side of marriage as well.  Our out and married Lesbian at work is getting a divorce less than a year since she could get married.

Amazingly , a lot of people think things will change for the better automatically if they get married.  Generally, the stay much the same.  Sometimes they get worse.  If there are internal (between the couple, not from outside sources) problems, they often get worse.
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

There were a lot of reactionary marriages after gays and lesbians were allowed to marry (I think a couple of my friends, now divorced, fall into this category), which I have mixed feelings about.  While it's of course a bummer, legal divorce is another benefit of marriage (equitable distribution, child support, all that), so I guess it's all part of the great circle of equality.

But then there's my own self-serving concern (via Joan Rivers):  "Gay marriage, I am so against it because all my gay friends are out. And if they get married, it will cost me a fortune in gifts."  ;)
