I seem to recall that California secession would probably stall out on water, and that's not something that fixing the budget would fix. ;)

That;s true, to some extent, you have to look at where those resources come from.  Texas might or might not have a similar problem.

I don't know the details on which Texas became a state but once they did they became a permanent part of the Union as far as I am concern.

A Supreme Court case from 1869 addressed this issue of secession and other items. I can't imagine much has changed.

Oh these days, yeah. Being near bankruptcy isn't a great start. But not too long ago we would have been much better off.

Agreed.

Doesn't a lot of New England get some or most of its water from Canada? Though judging by how staunchly conservative AZ (and NV I guess too), I'm sure they wouldn't be too keen on letting us have any of theirs. Unless, of course, they seceded too and needed the money. :B

Not that I'm aware of.

New England gets a lot of electric power from Niagara Falls (hydroelectric power) which I'm pretty sure is Canadian.

It's technically split in half. Horseshoe Falls is on our side, American Falls on yours (as well as Bridal Veil, the smaller and third waterfall).

And as always there is debate, but that's generally how it ends up.

I thought the generator was only in Canada.  Or does the US have a generator downstream?

As for New England, I think the watersheds for our major rivers lie partially in Canada, but I don't think our water utilities come from there.  Maybe some of the bigger towns  in VT, and along the border in ME.  My town has a local lake for municipal water source, but many homes have wells.

Also, given the fact that some of the grievances seem legit; namely the NDAA bill passed at the turn of the year (which I think is scarey) does anyone here think the petition signers have legitimate concerns?

One more thing: would anyone here be directly affected by any separatist acts?

The petitioners have legitimate concerns, but the petitions themselves aren't one.

NH, for example, would never take the petition seriously (when I looked, a good portion of the signatures were from out of state).  I mean, tourism is huge here.  People would stop coming with their money if they had to deal with passports and visas.  And residents would not be happy if they had to get a passport and go through customs to go see the Red Sox in Boston.

On the other hand, that might get some of the Mass people to go back home.  Hrmmm...

No they would just move in permanently and not go home, and complain it's not like this at home.
