2019 Donation Drive

It's time for our annual Server Donation Drive! We need to raise at least $650 (same as last year) to keep The Cauldron's server online for another year. Please help! Either hit that Paypal button to the right and make a one-time donation in any amount or set up a monthly Bronze, Silver or Gold Donor subscription. You can find more info in this message!

Donations as of 16 Sept 2019: $660 donated. $10 more our minimum goal! Let's beat last year's total of $99 more than the minimum!

Note: This total is updated manually, usually once a day

* "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" Problem Logging In?

If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

I do NOT talk to her about the President.   I just don't get it.

Partisan politics.  It's nasty.  There was similar ire directed towards Dubya, people who were convinced he could do nothing right (even if he did.)
I think just about every President has had a rabid anti-fan club.  My Dad still calls Nixon a fucker and a sonuvabitch.

Driving to work today, I encountered a truck with two bumperstickers on it.  The first was the traditional snake/"Don't Tread On Me."

The second just about broke my brain in half.  There was the cross-out circle (you know, like the Ghostbusters logo) with the Obama sun/flag symbol, and the words, "Don't blame me, I voted for the American."

...I... can't wrap my head around this.

At all.

Has anyone else heard of this sentiment? *braincreak*

Here's Obama's rebuttal of the 'long form' argument from a White House Correspondents' Dinner from last year.  It's great watching him try and keep a straight face.

Gotta admit I'm not an Obama supporter, but he does have style.
Yes that's Trump in the crowd.  I don't think he's very happy.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.  That... is hilarious. That's just... wonderful.

I don't know if it's hate, but the birther arguments are pretty loopy.
Equally classy are the "Don't blame me, I voted for the old guy and the MILF" stickers.  They're not as prevalent though.

I have Birthers in my family.  My mother, for one.  She's an intelligent person and we are very close and have a great relationship, but at this point I've learned:  do NOT talk to her about the President.   I just don't get it.

My coworker just came into the breakroom, heard what I was watching (the clip above), and laughed with me, then said that both his parents think that Obama is a terrorist. Whee.

I definately have a few in our family tree.  I get the birth certificate emails with thier justifications as to why about once a month it seems.  Bad part is parts of it is historically correct yet you can't get the wheat seperated from the chaff.

The best part is that since Obama's mother was an American citizen at the time of his birth,  the fact that he is a "natural born citizen" a required by the Constitution wouldn't be affected even if he had been born elsewhere.

You sure about that?  That contradicts at least two other cases that I'm aware of.

It's how my poli sci prof explained it to me, anyway.

That's how I've always understood it.  I'd be interested to hear more about the cases sailor is referring to.

McCain was born in Panama while his father was on active duty.  The Senate passed a bill saying that McCain was a natural born citizen since his parents were stationed overseas on govt orders.

The other case I was thinking of was Mitt Romney's father George who ran for President and was born to American parents in Mexico.  I thought the issue had been raised in his case, but I can't find confirmation that it was a factor in him dropping out of the race.

Note, the only question is whether the term "natural born" applies rather than just US citizen to people born to US citizen parent(s) overseas.

One could take the Senate bill above as evidence that Congress is not sure about non-US govt assigned people.

wikipedia (as much as that's worth) says he dropped out for other reasons, but the preponderences of constitution opinion was that he WAS eligible, since his parents were citizens and chose US citizenship for their children.

My guess is the senate was just being overprotective about McCain.

IIRC McCain was born before the case law or legal structure establishing that a child of a citizen was axiomatically a citizen was in place.  I don't know if the law referred to was what changed that.
