Numbers have no meaning
« on: October 17, 2011, 03:40:53 pm »
**sigh** Really they don't. Not when it comes to foster dogs.

Randall and I had agreed. Four dogs is our limit. That makes our two (Haley and Skeeter) and the two current senior fosters we have (Penny and Aggie). And we were sticking to that. After all, that was as many crates as we had.

Sticking to that like glue.

But here's what happens. Glue fails. Particularly when it's in the form of a 16.5 year old chocolate longhair dachshund that is getting dumped back into the rescue group after being in his "forever home" for a few years.

So the glue lost its stick 'em. And Friday, we bring in Padre who has made the ride from west Texas where he used to live to Dallas this past weekend, and from Dallas to Waco on Friday.

So the tally is five. And we're sticking to that.

Padre is a sanctuary case. That means he's here for the rest of his days with no real attempt at adopting him out. ATDR will most likely list him as a "sponsorship" dog, and he will be here with us until it's time for him to go.

And had he not been 16.5, we probably could not have taken him. But at that age -- even as good as he looks in the picture -- he probably doesn't have a great deal of time left and we couldn't stand the idea of him not have a nice place to live out his remaining days. Yes, we are suckers for the seniors.

He's beautiful, and you are both amazing. I wish I could do something like foster animals.

How sad that his "forever" family couldn't/didn't/wouldn't keep him! He's very lucky you two are (in Randall's words) suckers for the seniors.

Bless Padre's heart, it's worse than that, really. This was the second time he had to leave his family.

My understanding is the first time he ended up in a kill shelter, and ATDR pulled him out and got him adopted with this other family in west Texas. Then they dumped him back on ATDR.  So here is is 16.5 and no place to go.

We couldn't say no.

Oh yeah, right.  You two are working on becoming old cat ladies or the dog equivalent.  And all I can really say is: lucky dogs.

When Randall met me, I had five standard dachshunds, and had just recently gotten to that number when I lost two. Shortly before that, I had four adults and 6 puppies. So having five dogs again seems REALLY normal to me.

That's what he's afraid of, I think. LOL

He's such a beauty :D: You two are wonderful for doing this. I've always had a great love dogs in general, and so does my family (my year old rottie runs our household, and we all let him xD)

Given the oppertunity to foster? I'd probably be the rough equivalent of an old cat lady. And my allergies? Meh, they're cute, who cares? :p

I hope he stays happy and healthy :)
