Issues with teething puppy
« on: September 03, 2020, 10:12:39 pm »
Hi everyone,

I hope I put this in the right place. If not put it in the correct forum for me. So we got a new puppy last month, Lily Rose, and she is about 17 weeks old. According to her previous owners she was born on May 11. Anyway, we are having a little trouble with her teething. Right now she is going through that phase. Usually it starts about 3 months in and lasts till they are 6 months when they get their adult teeth. She has such sharp teeth. We're trying to get her to stop biting our fingers and hands. She even tries to bite at my chin and ear lobes. I know this is a way to be affectionate, but we have to nip it in the bud. We've got plenty of toys for her. Is there any advice? Thanks.

When I was raising my puppy I had a lot of play-bites too. His teeth were razor sharp and my fingers had lots of cuts. Aside from giving him Nylabones and other safe things to gnaw on, we made a point of loudly saying "Ouch!" any time the teeth touched us, and immediately ceasing play. He seemed eventually to understand that if he bit us, play stopped, so he eventually stopped. I hope this helps.

It does. We do say things like 'ouch' and 'no' to her. She's not reacting to that however. I am trying to keep her from biting. We have plenty of toys for her. However, I am still not certain what to do. However, we'll just have to keep at it.

I think using a firm no-nonsense voice for the word command (be it ouch or no) together with the bit I bolded above are key.  Good luck!

Thanks Perdita. I will definitely try that. Hopefully, that will help with her teething.
