Trying to gather info on cleansing/exorcising

My cousin has had something very malicious following her around this year. It tricked her at first and told her it was her dead brother. It's not. I'm worried it's not even a spirit but something worse. I'm just trying to figure out how to get rid of it - any suggestions would be great.

I'm curious as to what makes you think it's "something worse" than a spirit. Is there something in its behavior or actions that concerns you?

Regardless of what it might be, the first step would be simply telling it that it is not welcome and that it must leave.  Have your cousin do this in a calm and firm voice.  

If this does not work and the entity persists in bothering her, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram works well and is fairly easy to do.  The Golden Dawn version is here, but if you prefer a more Wicca-flavored version, they are out there.

We've tried the basics. Sage, we've both sat together praying and tried asking it to leave. It doesn't show itself to her, but it talks to her and does things to her. It told her it loves her and no one else can have her. It only shows itself to the people around her. We think it's trying to keep everyone away from her. I just have a bad feeling.

I'd cleanse her house, myself, and do the Lesser Banishing Ritual or something like it. I'd follow that up with some work to make the home safe and peaceful - if you dig the Lesser Banishing, you could follow it up with the Ritual of the Rose Cross, but really I think anything with similar intention would be fine. You could also hang up some protective amulets or doodads after.

Thank you. I had some thoughts on personal protective 'doodads' I could use for her. She's in Chicago right now, and I'm 6 hours south. This thing follows her everywhere she goes. it's just stuck to her.

So she has to kick it off at least for a bit before - sort of like evicting a party guest before you lock the doors, you know?

She could also look into cleansing baths - she could make on up easily with salt, for starters.

I sent her links to the rituals, told her to get some supplies. Fortunately she has a roommate with her, who has seen "him", and is trying to help. She's at college, she won't be back home for 2 more weeks. I hope all this works and by the time she gets home we can just work on preventative and that he's already gone.

The Hanuman Chalisa popped into my mind, back when I considered myself Hindu. Hanuman is said to get rid of evil spirits, and reciting or listening to the Chalisa does a lot of good (it did for me, at least).

Thank you so much. This interests me, personally. I will talk to her about it and see if she would be interested. She seems so desperate today. We have talked about her having something following her but suddenly today she called terrified.

Well if not only your friend but other people can plainly see this 'shadowy man', then it's doesn't sound supernatural or anything that needs arcane methods to deal with him. It's either a real person (in which case he can be dealt with) or someone creating that illusion.  There's nothing to be afraid of if in terms of 'occult' phenomenon. If something can be seen by numbers of people, it can  be studied and dealt with. The best thing is not to build it up into something frightening or 'untouchable' .
I would be fearful if I thought it was just me that was seeing something but  when I found something to be a concrete phenomenon, I'd just be pissed off  if some dude was following me around or trying to play tricks with my friends and I.
The best way to help is to get your friend to stop being afraid and find out who is going to such lengths to control her life. The worst thing to do is imagine something cannot be controlled and therefore do nothing and just be a sitting duck to someone's sick games.

Shadowy man with attachment issues who scares others away, eh? I've dealt with something almost exactly like this, and in my case, cleansing wasn't enough to actually make it go away permanently. No, instead I had to get very, very visibly and verbally angry multiple times before it got the hint. Even then, it would still occasionally pop up just outside of the cleansed area. It took a few months of ignoring it after that before it actually lost interest and left. Persistent bugger.

Personally, I've always thought it was a ticked off house elf or something of the kind, so if your cousin's place is unkempt or in need of repairs, cleaning up might lessen the spirit's ability to anchor itself in the house, in addition to the other suggestions.

Either way, I hope your cousin has better luck at it than I did.

When it talks to her she should order it to leave and perform some type of banishing. The lesser ritual of the pentagram which others have suggested is good but she should practice it before she needs to use it like this. She should not talk to it or othertwise interact with it (except to order it to leave and do banishings).

Others around her can do the same if they are willing when they see it. If they aren't into magick, ordering it away in the name of whatever deity they follow would be fine.

A good cleansing of her living space and property would not hurt.
