Can't find my webcam. This sort of thing happens a lot.
« on: June 17, 2012, 01:44:57 am »
My webcam has literally disappeared, because for the longest time it was right on the coffee table and now it's... NOT. It can't have been stolen because nobody would take a crap webcam like mine, especially not without the laptop that has its software on it. I thought I must have moved it, but I've gone through the entire apartment and I still haven't found it.

This kind of thing has happened since we moved to this apartment a few years ago, and with my entire family. Example: Mom puts her keys on the kitchen table, goes to get dressed, and then she heads out for work, but suddenly she can't find her keys until she checks her room--and they're on her dresser.

Then there's me and MY keys. When I get back home from work or school, I hang them on a hook in the hallway. When I'm not going out, my keys stay on the freaking hook. But sometimes when they AREN'T on their hook or in my bag, like on the kitchen or coffee table, they end up somewhere completely different. It can't be my family, because they'd put my keys on the hook.

If there's time, we spend a good couple of hours looking, and we never find it even though there are three of us. When we give up looking, it turns up in such an obvious place that it makes us feel stupid and relieved.

Currently we're all resigned to the "misplacing something and finding it next week" phenomenon, but I've been wondering if it's some kind of fairy, spirit, or house-wight messing with us. This happens in the exact same way every time, and most of the time we SEE each other putting stuff somewhere.

I took a minute last night to ask, "If anything took my webcam, could I have it back, please?" but nothing happened. I'm not sure if I asked them properly, because I got a very faint "Really? That's it?" feeling. I also searched the house again just in case I DID misplace it, and still no luck.

If it's a fairy, what should I do? I'd leave offerings if I could, but my family would wonder why I left perfectly good food out, and we have two dogs--one is ours, one is my niece's. My niece's dog has the most delicate stomach EVER. If she eats something that isn't dog food or meat, she barfs. I wouldn't want either dog to eat my offering when we're out, and I especially don't want my niece's dog to throw it back up.

I should note that the apartment is pretty old--our heater broke last winter. The repairman was surprised we even HAD it, so he needed to install a newer model and redo the wiring.

And one day later, Mom finds it in the "random electronics" box in her room.

Which is relieving, but still weird since neither of us would have put it there.

Welcome to  my LIFE! I've had the same  problem all my life no matter where I live.... I call my  house  sprites "Fred" and "George"  they  move  with me. I tend  to get   rather  grumpy with them when they  take  things so lately  they have toned it down  somewhat. :D:

Harry Potter reference for the win! XD

I figured that I'd find my webcam right after I posted for help, but it's better than buying a new one and finding it. Maybe they realized how fed up I was?

Apologies in case that sort of thing offended you (or them). Interesting how two ordinary names can gain a certain connotation, though.

Hmm, really I have the same problem and similar circumstances. Example, wake up and carries phone in hand down stairs. Phone in pockets while walking dogs, then places phone on shelf to change, continue w rest of preparation for school....fast forward to realizing phone is missing....looking and retracing steps in mind n sometimes for real. I'm thinking of rooms  placed it in n after some time I get the sense I'm missing something in remembering something because if I remembered everything correctly then I should have found it by now, fast forward to finding it and realizing 'oh I remember now.' I would say.

No spirits at work just selective memory. It might not b like that in your case just pointing out that when something like this is similar to what I experience and for many other ppl I'm not a hundred percent sure that it is fairies or spirits. Perhaps video taping your keys unless that webcam was ur only came.

Growing up, we had a spirit in the house that did the same thing. He is still there, and still does the moving stuff on us.  We would have shoes move, purses, clothing, etc. One time I remember was when my mom admitted that this was happening. We were all watching tv in the living room (this was when there were dial tvs and one tv per house). Her purse was sitting behind the recliner. When the show was over, my mom needed  to get something out of her purse and it wasn't there anymore. All of us looked for it, except for my dad who went outside to the garage, and no one could find it. She was getting mad thinking one of us was playing a trick on her, so she went into her bedroom and there was her purse sitting on the floor in front of the door. We looked there a few minutes earlier, in fact she was the one that looked in her room originally (we weren't' really allowed in my parents bedroom growing up).

We never got so upset with him that we didn't want him there, but we would "yell" at him if  he did something that upset us (like pushing my cat off of a box when I first got her and came home to visit, or blowing out the candles in the basement when I was drawing (I complained to him until he relit them. (that was cool!))). I think he just does  this stuff to have fun. Most of the time, there is a protective presence at the house and we think it is him too. I kinda miss him since I moved out (its been 15 years so far).

Well, I've done the yelling without the quotation marks with something/one with a habit of taking electric cables and smallish objects at one of my previous flats. At that point my iron had been gone with the wind for a week and an urgently needed extension cable had left its place in the storage cabinet (+ who knows what else). I stood in the middle of the living room, yelling "I'm going to banish every single one of you, if my stuff isn't returned! NOW!".

Stuff got returned, to quite odd places but nevertheless returned. The iron was found in  between two towels in a freshly washed pile I had just folded, pretending it had been there all the time. :p

I've done similar when things got a bit out of hand. I've also offered 'bribes' of whiskey or shiny bits (coins, jacks, pretty beads or rocks) if I needed a particular item back quickly. Generally with a "I know you're having fun but I really need (whatever) back. Here's a trade." kind of note. Most of the time whatever item is returned to an easily findable (but highly unlikely) place within a day (and the shiny bits are never seen again). If I notice something missing that I don't need right away, I'll often just call out that I'd really like it back when they're done with it. And it usually shows back up within a few days. (Although I swear sometimes I hear giggles when I say it.)
