Exorcism
« on: November 03, 2013, 04:34:31 am »
So I have some questions pertaining to preforming exorcisms.
I am moving into a point in my life and research that will require me to come into direct confrontation with negative, stubborn, or possibly demonic entities.
Being Pagan I am having a lot of difficulty in finding useful information that can be applied  in this field. This being because everything I can find is specific to a religion I don't follow.

I understand the dangers of this field. I firmly believe that with a growing amount/awareness of paranormal activity in our ever changing world that there needs to be people ready to handle things when something goes wrong.

Any help that can be offered would be most appreciated.

What I am looking for specifically are as follows:
-Methods of removing an entity anywhere it may be.(a person, home, pet, object, ect)
-Methods of combating and possibly destroying a negative/demonic entity
-Methods of ensuring my own protection during and after these events. I really don't want something following me home/hunting me.

I usually begin by firmly but politely telling the entity that it is not welcome and that it must leave.

For anything that refuses to go when told, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram is my go-to for banishing work.  I prefer the Golden Dawn's version, but there are some wiccan-flavored variations floating around.  I find these versions to be a bit watered down, however.

I usually follow any banishing with a final cleansing and warding of the space.

If it's a problematic spirit/entity, just calmly banish it. Don't provoke and don't let yourself be provoked. Anger and combativeness on your part is just going to fed into whatever spirit you're dealing with.

FWIW, I don't believe that entities or spirits can actually be destroyed, at least not by the likes of us mortals.  Banished, yes; destroyed, no.

Strays following you home is definitely something to be avoided.  Strong personal wards can be helpful here, as can strong household wards to keep things out of your living space.

I also make a practice of doing a purification/cleansing ritual after any kind of spirit work.  Usually this takes on the form of smudging with dragonsblood (my preferred choice) or sage (more commonly used).  Most importantly, this is done prior to setting foot into my house (or anyone else's for that matter).

On a side note, I don't particularly like the words "exorcism" or "demonic", as they can be very loaded terms often used by people who are pushing a specific religious agenda.  Unfortunately, the words do get thrown around a lot in popular  reference to spirit and entity work.

Thank you for the information. I personally do believe that they can be destroyed. Being a living thing in some form it should die like any other. While their life span may be far beyond our own that doesn't mean that they are immune. However this is just a personal belief that I have not been able to find evidence for as of yet.

I guess the next issue to tackle is what do I do if these steps don't work. Being a "worst case scenario" kind of person I plan for the worst and hope for the best. What do I do if I encounter a being that is too strong for these rituals. Or has the ability to physically manifest/influence the environment, thus interrupting such rituals. I understand a salt circle will keep the entity out, but i'm not so sure it will block a chair it throws. What do I do if it enters a person. I understand that these are very extreme cases and not the norm, however if i don't have a plan and one arises things could get very dicey for everyone involved.

Does anyone have any experience to share with this type of problem?

I apologize for the long quote and post. As for the quote I am still getting used to the quoting system this site uses. The post length was necessary.

I'll give you the same advice to anyone who begins by asking 101 level questions and then wants to jump to advance graduate level coursework without obtaining the needed experience in between:

Start small and build your experience. Like anything else in life, you need to have a good handle on when DIY is okay and when it's time to call in an expert.  If you're still at stage where you aren't sure how to handle a basic encounter, then you really need to be aware of the limitations of your knowledge and experience. You also need to know when to walk away before getting in over your head. In other words, if an entity doesn't leave willingly and you aren't able to banish it, you need to let someone wit more knowledge and experience handle it.

Keep in mind that chair-throwing demons tend to only exist in movies and on tv.  I'm not saying that there aren't some nasty things running around out there, but 99% of what you are going to run across are not of the sentient evil variety so much as little pot-stirrers who get their energy from strong emotions.  What is portrayed in pop culture is a highly sensationalized version of spirit and entity work, played up by people who have a financial stake in making people believe their claims.  Reality is generally far less dramatic and  flying chair-filled.
