Zodiac Trees?
« on: February 11, 2013, 05:36:22 pm »
I've been meaning to make a wand, but I want it to be specially linked to me. I've read that there are trees that coincide with zodiac signs (like gems), but when I looked it up, I recieved many different results. (ie: I'm a Virgo and have read that my tree is a Weeping Willow, Vine, Buckthorn and Cherry (or any nonedible nut tree).) I was wondering if there actually is a chart for such a thing.
Thank you and blessed be,
K

A chart? No. Different folk, magical, as astrological traditions list different trees.

Oh, okay. I suppose I have quite a bit of research and experimenting ahead, then! Thank you!

Is there a particular path you identify with? That could help narrow it down. I'm also Virgo (Sept 8th) and do find grape vine "speaks to me", so to speak.
I\'m living in the Shadows and the Night, wrapped in warm darkness, safe and sure.
My Path shines by the Moon\'s fragile light, it frees my Mind and keeps my Heart pure.

I own a book called the Celtic Lunar Zodiac: How to Interpret Your Moon Sign by Helena Paterson that uses Celtic astrology for determining which sign you are - all are associated with a tree.  On the back cover, there's a quick reference chart:

Tree Name/sign, Celtic Tree Name = Dates that fall under sign
Birch, Beth = December 24 - January 20
Rowan, Luis = January 21 - February 17
Ash, Nion = February 18 - March 17
Alder, Fearn = March 18 - April 14
Willow, Saille = April 15 - May 12
Hawthorn, Uath = May 13 - June 9
Oak, Duir = June 10 - July 7
Holly, Tinne = July 9 - August 4
Hazel, Coll = August 5 - September 1
Vine, Muin = September 2 - September 29
Ivy, Gort = September 30 - October 27
Reed, Ngetal = October 28 - November 24
Elder, Ruis = November 25 - December 22
Mistletoe, Uil-iok = December 23

For more information Celtic trees, I recommend this site:  Celtic Tree Astrology.

Also... I just thought I'd note that sometimes, going by the tree of an astrology chart doesn't work out for you as well as you might initially think.  It can be better to use a fallen branch from a tree of your childhood home, or a particular tree that you see and admire greatly rather than one from a tree that you've never had any kind of interaction with before.  I would suggest keeping your options open.  There's nothing wrong with having more than one wand, as well.

Associating trees with a Celtic "astrology" is a modern invention.  That doesn't mean it can't work or be meaningful for you.  Just be aware that it is not an ancient Celtic practice.

I like Joelle's Sacred Grove for "celtic" tree astrology info. Aster's right in that it's a modern system linked to ogham, but it seems to be a workable system in it's own right.

Also, if you can get your hands on it, Steve Blamires' Celtic Tree Mysteries is quite good.

As an aside, I wish there was a better way to draw a line between practices that are Celtic Recon/historically celtic and the more modern stuff, like the tree astrology, Frank MacEowan's works, etc. Maybe "neoCeltic"? I hate to slap "neo" as a qualifier on everything, but these things do have a celtic influence, even if they aren't derived from the history and/or the lore.

Yeah, it's not an ancient practice or anything; I think it's only labeled Celtic because of the tree and mythology associations the book has made with it.

It can work for people, but sometimes a specific type of tree is rare or doesn't grow in someone's area... or maybe you don't feel a true connection to that tree - just because one method of astrology or magical associations say that this tree should represent so-and-so, doesn't necessarily mean you feel that same connection; in those cases, it might be better to go by your intuition and choose a tree that you've met in real life, that's local or accessible, for your own personal wand.  It's all about choosing whatever works best for you, so there's a lot of ways to go with it.
