Wicca without magick or witchcraft
« on: May 09, 2013, 02:05:53 am »
I have been very interested in Wicca for quite some time. I'm not sure exactly which tradition I would fit into, although I am quite eclectic. The thing is, I have no interest whatsoever in magick or being a witch, at all. It just isn't something I'm interested in on any level. However, the spiritual side of Wicca really appeals to me.

Is it possible to still be Wiccan and not practice witchcraft or magick at all?

It's a sticky subject. Formally, I would say no. Wicca is a religion built around magic and witchcraft; its main roots are in Western Occult ceremonial magic and a revival of folk magic practices. Its own name derives from "witch" in Old English.

In practice, I'm sure that you can be lax about practising magic. But I would contend that maybe a different religion would suit you. There are other pagan religions that don't focus on magic; eclectic Neopaganism in general has a lot of spiritual influences from Wicca but no hard emphasis on its practices or magic.

I believe there is a type of Wicca called Blue Star Wicca which is not very Magic focused. Though I can't tell you anything about it or how legit it is

Only in the same way it is possible to be Christian without believing in Christ. Magic is central to any form of the Wiccan religion truly deserving of the name. Many of the central practices of the religion involve magic (such as creating a circle as sacred space).

Unfortunately, magick is pretty essential to Wicca. You might like to check out something like Neo-Druidism or maybe general eclectic Neo-Paganism instead.

Blue Star exists as a denomination.  Whoever told you it was "not very magic focused", however, is very likely mistaken.  (That's not consistent with the Blue Stars I've met or things I have heard about assistance they have provided other witches.)

As others have said, it doesn't make a lot of sense?

There is, however, a distinction here between magic and spellcraft.

I do acts of magic pretty much every day - everything from personal energy management (centering, grounding, shielding) to small acts intended to attune myself to a particular goal or desire. (I have a shrine, I do small daily ritual things at it, I listen to specific music related to the goal, I clean my house in a specific way to make it a calm place to be, I add essential oils or perfume to my bath for a particular intention, etc.)

Casting a circle - the fundamental space for Wiccan and related paths ritual practice - is also an act of magic.

However, I may well go months without doing something that's specifically spell crafting (a single or repeated set of actions designed for a specific outcome that's done in a ritual setting that involves tools and chants and raising energy and sending it off for the use).

In fact, I have some planned for tomorrow, and it's been at least six months since I did spell work, though I've done other major magical acts - including assisting at initiation rituals - in that time.

So, perhaps the question to start with here is "What are you defining as magic" and "Why do you not want to do it, but find stuff about Wicca - where it is heavily interwoven - of interest?" The answers to that might help us figure out better suggestions for you.
