Why do gods call people?
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:37:23 am »
So maybe it's my imagination but lately I've noticed that Pagans get called on by the gods a lot. As in when they are wondering what gods to follow those gods kind of show up and say something or do something that sets said Pagan on their path. But I never got this. Why does this happen and how do gods pick people like this?

To maybe further help people understand my confusion in this I have had interactions with sprites who claimed to be pagan gods (this was before I had truly become Christian and I was exploring all sorts of possibilities at the time). One of these supposed gods was Thoth who when I said I didn't really think I would ever worship him he said that was fine and he didn't really care. Another time I encounter Athena and she said that she really didn't have any interest in me...WHAT! Maybe I was being tricked maybe I'm crazy but I would like to get some second opinions as this was a time in my life that was confusing enough.

I feel gods call us to teach things that only they can.  Pretty simple for me.  They may "stick around" for years or a month or two.  I don't get heartbroken or anything when they "move on".  I just take it as process.

The Gods call and aid those that are in need of guidance. This has come to my realization. Note that I am a beginner pagan, so I have experienced only this aspect.

I'm afraid your explanation of why you're confused confuses me even more.  The fact that there are people who believe they have had contact and guidance from members of a broad category of entities doesn't have a whole lot to do with whether or not one or two specific entities have specific interest in a specific person.

I mean.  I have relationships of various sorts with a number of people, but I don't have an interest in forming a relationship with any and every person who might meet me.

Relationships with gods aren't all that different from relationships with people.  Some people like me; some don't.  Some gods like me; some don't.

I don't think it was either of those things.

I think the gods come to us because we have something to offer them. Yes, they can be supportive, they teach us, guide us, protect us, some even love us. But for the most part, I think they have work for us to do. If you're not suited for the work they need done, they aren't going to stick around very long.

So, maybe Athena wasn't interested because She knew that you weren't the right person to do Her work. Obviously, She was right. You're a Christian now, you found your path and it didn't lead to Her.

That's not a bad thing. I wouldn't take Her rejection personally, you just weren't the right person for the job.
