trance music for meditation?

So I've gotten into a semi-weekly practice of meditation, but I've found something sort of...odd.

I've tryed the seguestions of playing softer music of the sounds of nature, but they've done little for me. However when I listen to ambient trance or even video game OSTs I sometimes go into ancidental meditation or get more vivid visions.

Has this happened to anyone else or am I the only one?

I find soft music often annoying. :

For a silent meditation no music at all, is the most helpful thing ime.

What can help to let go in the beginning is in fact repetitive music. It lulls your day mind, but since it is 'boring' - not like flowing soft harmonies - you don't pay attention to it after a while and the rest of your mind is free to let pictures arise more easily.

So yes, I think this is a rather common thing, given how the human mind works.

Two days ago I had on repeat on my earphones for a meditation. Honestly, I have listened to just about everything for meditations, from nature sounds to white noise to Celtic Women and Daft Punk. If it works, it works.

In all fairness, I prefer silent meditations.

It still sometimes does that. That's why I used it two days ago. My head was so full, I needed something to pump it up so I could quiet down. But in general, I appreciate the quiet.

Sometimes, when I feel I can't wind down, I'll just put a guided meditation in the CD player and usually fall asleep during it.

Guided meditations tend to have that terrible background music that makes me want to break something. A wind chime or birds or something. With my HSP, the background music distracts me so much from the words, I end up a jittering mess of nerves

Agreed. Some of them are horrible.
I have a rather decent chakra meditation, where the music changes with each chakra.

O.o whoa, that's a surprise. I always thought it was a bit odd, considering that now every time I just stand there in, say, assassin's creed my mind clears from the background music. Some of them I listen to outside of the game like

I think part of it is finding something that resonates with you. The new-age soft music does nothing for me. All it does is distract me. The song I linked to, I played for Dionysus a while back and He liked it so there you go

I don't mind wind chimes, as long as they're my own, jingling a couple yards away from my head.

But no, so-called 'relaxation music' does nothing for me. I much prefer voices (it's important to be more than one). Put on a Gregorian chant CD and I zone out within minutes. A cappella chant doesn't just aid me into meditation, it induces it.

They don't call that genre of electronica "trance" for nothing.  Way, way back in the mists of time, the rave scene was an explicitly anti-drug/drug-free culture; the idea was to use the music itself to get the mind-altering effects.

I'm another who mostly doesn't care for new-agey meditation music - all too often, it's musically mediocre, packed in sugar syrup:sick:.  (I dunno if that's why it annoys Tana, but it's why it annoys me.)  My tastes run more in a blues/folk/prog-rock direction usually - not everything is meditation-suitable, of course, but I've used things ranging from traditional Celtic to bluegrass to headbanger-ish.  And, yep, electronica - I don't own much of that, since it's not as much to my taste for non-meditation listening, but when that's what I want for meditation, I'll often head over to New Grounds and find something that fits my needs/mood.
