The Nine Worlds and the World Tree?
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:21:27 pm »
I've been reading through a site or two on Asatru, and I've found myself slightly enamoured with the mythology. :D:

I know there isn't much of a back story to this, but the question is nagging at me. If there are nine worlds connected to eachother by the World Tree, what are they? Aside from the Human World (Midgard I think), are they all different places you could end up after death?

Its a huge curiosity thing is all. Thankyou in advance for any answers! :)

The nine worlds are:

Nidavellir (Dwarves)
Svartlheim (Dark elves)
Niflheim ( ice/ underworld)
Helheim (underworld)
Alfaheim (elves)
Jotunheim (giants)
Vanaheim (Vanir)
Asgard (Aesir)
Midgard (Man)

Some worlds are questionable. If Niflheim and Helheim are the same place it leaves room for Muspelheim (fire).

There are a few theories on Yggdrasil and tons of charts that try to organize it all. The underlying worldview is that our world is full of wights, good and bad, that affect and influence our lives and the world.

As for the afterlife: traditionally its believed we continue on in the grave mound or in the halls of our ancestors/gods. The worlds are not different 'heavens'.

That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

Er...thanks? :)

Though I didn't really say anything that isn't already on Wikipedia. ;)

Heh, true - but it was nice and simply put. Reading over it made me realize I'm far closer to Heathenry than I thought.
