what am i then?
« on: September 03, 2012, 08:55:26 pm »
okay so yes i do follow manannan mac lir, but i don't believe i am wiccan really. i am not a witch (i am a hands on person). from what i have learned of them, i am not a druid either. since i do believe and accept war and violence as an inevitability, i do try to solve my problems peacefully.

basically i am asking what am i?

i want to practice what the ancient celt warriors, and hunters practiced. i have been told i hold some connection to the Picts tribe, and wish to try to practice as they did.

I don't think anyone can answer that but you.  But something to consider is that Celtic is a language grouping not a racial grouping.  As such I am unaware of any universal equation that Celtic Warriors / Hunters did things the same way from place to place.  Given all the various nations or tribal groupings that are identified beneath the Celtic language groupings you might want to try and narrow down which grouping your actually interested in.

If I recall correctly the god you mention is actually Irish so that may be the area you wish to research.  My advise would be to look to the invasion stories and such to see what practices and things are referenced in them.

As far as actual books I have to suggest you ask those who practice a more Celtic practice as I only have limited surface knowledge.

Here's one place you might start at.

http://www.luminarium.org/mythology/ireland/  especially under the Heroes section as many of those stories fall into the saga's that are part of the invasion stories.

You probably want to start with the Book of Invasions, which is the story of the various groups said to have lived in Ireland.  There are also plenty of cattle raid stories that might interest you.  Also, check out the stories of the Fianna.

A couple of good sites are:

http://www.ancienttexts.org/library/celtic/irish/

http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/index.htm#ireland

Caveat:  For many people, it's easier to understand these stories if you read them in the context of a book of mythology that explains how they fit into the culture, what the symbology means, etc.   There are good recommendations for Celtic mythology books in the CR FAQ reading list: http://www.paganachd.com/faq/readinglist.html.  Also, of you haven't read the CRFAQ itself, you really should, ven if you're not a recon.  It has a lot of good info on Celtic religion.

Hope this helps

Another good resource is the Corpus of Electronic Texts, run by University College Cork; it's translations of most of the old texts
