If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Questions to get started as a teenage Eclectic Pagan
« on: September 05, 2018, 10:22:40 am »
Hello! As I wrote in my introduction, I got a whole lot of questions. Not only do I have not as many pieces of information as I thought I could get, but I'm also a teen, which makes it harder.

So, for now, I got "called" by three Deities, namely Cernunnos, Brigid, and Freyja. I've been doing lots of searches about them these past few days, as well as about Wicca, Paganism, Druidism, and Shamanism. Now, I can say I know "a little bit" more as before, but I feel I need help anyways. My questions are:

-Can I, as an Eclectic Pagan, consider myself as a Wiccan even if I'm not part of a coven (though sharing about the same beliefs, values, and practices as a Wiccan)? I feel better as a solitary Wiccan, at least for now.

-What should I write in a Books of Shadows?

-Should I tell my friends about my "new" religion/beliefs when the time comes?

-How and why should I worship and pray? I heard I should do rituals in a circle in a forest, but I "got" neither. (In my city, there's a beautiful and big green place with lots of trees but it's not a forest and it's not always safe at night if I'm alone)

-How can I, besides being on this Forum, get in touch with young/teenage Pagans?

-As a teen, I haven't got that much money. How can I be a Pagan without investing much? (only a limited amount of euros (I'm French) a month)

-How can I "feel" and/or "get in touch" with the Deities?

These may be weird questions but I needed to ask them. I think I'll add new questions if I get some more. Thanks for reading and helping me! :)

Hello! As I wrote in my introduction, I got a whole lot of questions. Not only do I have not as many pieces of information as I thought I could get, but I'm also a teen, which makes it harder.

These are great questions, and very welcome ones!

However, having a long list of questions in a thread, about a wide range of topics, can be quite hard for other people to answer. Some people will have thoughts on some of your questions, but not others. As the thread continues, people may forget they meant to say something about an earlier question, and so on.

It will probably be easier for people responding (and probably for you, in being able to follow different pieces of the conversation) if you do a series of threads, starting with the questions you're most concerned about right now. It's okay to have related questions in a thread if that works, but usually keeping them closely related works better than a wide spread.

For example, your questions about "How and why should I worship or pray" and "How can I feel and get in touch with deities" fit together, or your questions about whether you can consider yourself Wiccan and what and how to tell people about your religion/beliefs (because they both deal with 'what do I call myself and how do I explain that to other people - whether that's other Pagans or people in my life'.)

Lots of new threads are great! There's no limit! But it is usually easier if you keep new threads to a couple a day. (Two is fine. Five is probably too many, if they're substantive questions.)

People are busy, they read the forum at different times, and many times may have time to only reply to a couple of threads before they need to do something else. So if you post lots of substantive great questions (like the ones below), they're going to have to pick and choose which they answer.

Replying to posts in a thread that's already going is a little different: people will have mostly figured out if it's a thread they're interested in or giving priority to reading and replying to. Once a thread gets going, reponses may also be less time-intensive than an original explanation of how someone does something or approaches a topic.

Does that make sense?

If you wanted to start a new thread or two with the first questions you want to tackle, that's probably the best way to go here. I often keep lists of things I want to circle back to, and you might also find that helpful, as you read and learn more. (I keep them in my to-do app, but a plain text file or notebook works fine.)

I agree with what Jenett says! People have also asked questions similar to yours, so you can browse the archive and revive the discussions if you have additional questions!

For the "Do I tell my friends" part though, it is always a tricky debate, and while there are a lot of different nationalities on this forum, I've found that most discussions about the social aspects of paganism are very centered on american social dynamics. From a fellow French, I've had a hard time relating to the experiences of other people on this forum, because our country definitely has a peculiar relationship with religion!

Here's a bunch of French-specific tips:

I've found that rather than telling me friends that I was pagan and looking for fellow pagans right off the bat, it's more interesting to start discussions on the little things. I don't have a single IRL friend who identifies as pagan, but by keeping an open ear to the people around me i've found out that I know one person who reads tarot very well, one person whose grandmother was a faith healer, one person who is a Buddhist with an eclectic twist to their practice, that my neighbor has crystals and prays to nature... I'm very happy to connect with all those different experiences, and while I could call of these people witches in some way, because of the very pragmatic French way, none of them would call what they do witchcraft, magic, or paganism. So rather than to drop the big word and the sensitive subject of religion with your entourage you could start with the little things!

For the financial part: do you have a local Emmaüs? You're probably familiar with Emmaüs, if you're not, it's a brand of charity shops that are all over the country. In cities, there are some small Emmaüs store that are kind of expensive, but if you get out of the city, in the countryside (usually accessible by bus) there are usually bigger Emmaüs localized in farms with tons of objects that are extremely cheap. That's where most of my gear comes from. You've got beautiful fabrics at 50 cents, that I used for my altar, a 6€ beautiful wooden table that I also bought there. Candles of various shape, copper cauldrons for 1€, old knives and wooden tools, bells, drums, 2€ crystals, crystal pendants...

For your other questions, they're very wide, so like Jenett said you'll have more luck discussing them in specific threads. Welcome here anyways, it's nice to have a fellow French person here!

I third the suggestion that you start threads for specific questions, but I'll throw a few things in here.

-Can I, as an Eclectic Pagan, consider myself as a Wiccan even if I'm not part of a coven (though sharing about the same beliefs, values, and practices as a Wiccan)? I feel better as a solitary Wiccan, at least for now.

I recommend highly Jenett's seeking site, and particularly for this question the page on the range of uses of the word "Wicca".
http://gleewood.org/seeking/beginning/range-of-uses/

Your suggested usage is certainly within the range of What Is Commonly Done, but as you can see it is ambiguous.

Quote
-What should I write in a Books of Shadows?

In traditional Wicca, the Book of Shadows is written according to the tradition.  Without a traditional teacher, there is no "should"; write what you find appropriate.  (I recommend not shoulding too much in general, I think it's bad for a body.)

Quote
-Should I tell my friends about my "new" religion/beliefs when the time comes?

Again with the shoulding.  You know what your life situation is; we don't.  We can't even advise with competence.

-As a teen, I haven't got that much money. How can I be a Pagan without investing much? (only a limited amount of euros (I'm French) a month)
