Question Regarding Ages/Apocalypse Mythology
« on: July 23, 2017, 01:01:39 am »
So, purely out of curiousity, I've begun reading some works by a guy who thinks civilization is in some sort of spiritual decline, and that the ancient world kind of knew about it. At one point, he mentioned an "Age of the Wolf", connected to Nordic Mythology.

So, this was interesting--it was the first time I heard of stuff equivalent to Hindu yugas, or Greek Ages of Man in Norse religion. Having hunted around for further descriptions a tiny bit, I haven't found anything but passing references, which is frustrating.

So, my biggest question for you all is: What do you make of this "Age of the Wolf"? What do you know about myths of different "Ages" in Norse religion generally? And do you lend any credence to all that?

Thanks. :)

I have no knowlage about this, but i know some vikings, would recomend that you contact the Viking King of Norway. Gunnar i think his name is. His long house is situatded in Gudvangen. think you can find their contact info if you goodle. The Viking king if Noway and/or the Viking village of Norway. I have studied seid magic, but only for a short time, as my calling lies else where. but know ther is ture devotian to the Åsastro(which is how Norwgians call the old norse religion) so in honor of my friends that now have dedicated them selves to this path. Hail Odin, and may Hugin and Munin give thee tidings from far and near so you may find the wisdom you seek

This is one of those questions where if you're curious about how a specific person is using the term, mentioning their name is really handy. (Assuming the works are reasonably public, y'know?) People come up with all sorts of things, and it's sometimes very hard to figure out if it's their personal concept (or a concept shared with a small group) or a larger thing, so knowing where you found it is very helpful with that.

The references I'm finding on searches (though I tried "Norse" instead of "Nordic") are finding mostly hits for a post-apocalyptic comic or a role-playing game supplement, plus a few mentions that get into valorising the Nazi side in WWII.

I've never heard of this 'Age of the Wolf.' However, I think that the giant wolf Fenrir was supposed to break free of his chains and partake in Ragnarok. Maybe it is a reference to this event? I don't really know much more than that. Maybe he had to fight Odin or something?

I have heard of the Wolf Age before, used in the same way you mention, as the last age of the world as we know it, or similar. I vaguely remember there being maybe one source, possibly an Icelandic saga, that used the term, but I do not think it's an established Thing in Norse lore/culture. It's more of a modern thing. I think.

Wolf age is mentioned only in the Eddic poem Völuspá, in reference to Ragnarök:

Brothers shall strive | and slaughter each other;
Own sisters' children | shall sin together;
Ill days among men, | many a whoredom:
An axe-age, a sword-age | shields shall be cloven;
A wind-age, a wolf-age, | ere the world totters.

These ages follow Fimbulvetr (terrible winter) that is one of the portents of  Ragnarök.  The ages represent or describe the breakdown of moral order and the destruction that will accompany Ragnarök.

Here is a good Heathen blog on Ragnarök:
