Prayer Bead Prayers?
« on: January 11, 2013, 07:03:08 pm »
I've always been very fond of the use of prayer beads as a meditative tool, (I find it hard to meditate due to fidgeting and having something to use my hands for is very helpful,) and was wondering if anyone had any short, easily-memorized prayers that could be repeated while counting along a string of beads.  (I haven't decided what religion is right for me so I don't really care what path it's from.  If anything, the more diverse my options the better.)

I have one that I use for Bast (well, two, but one is really long) that I can share if you want. There's also quite a few for Lord Ganesha that are one line long and that are meant to be repeated 108 times. Obviously you can do fewer chants if you so desire. Lol.

I don't have any chants, mantras, or prayers that aren't deity-related. Sorry! :o
Leave your darkness with me, and I will make you shine.

Did you make your beads? I was thinking of doing this. And by make your beads I meant to you string them into strands yourself? Do you also mix stones? I kind of want to make mine so I can wear them after the ritual/spell/prayer. I'm waiting for my gem magic book to arrive in the mail though. And my fire mountain gems catalog.

What kind of prayers are you looking for?

I am also fond of prayer and meditation beads.  I have strung a couple of sets now with actual beads and made a few that are just knotted string.

I have used a chant to the elements that I modified (I don't have the original anymore), but it has short stanzas for each of the five elements.  This was for my first set which is strongly modeled after a rosary (I have a couple of rosaries that I picked up many years ago because I loved the idea of them).  This one is made of a variety of stone beads (picked to match the element they represent), strung in sets of five, with filler beads between, then larger ones to separate the sets of five.  It is long, hangs about to the middle of my chest (with the traditional Y shape of a rosary).

I have a very simple knotted cord with 50 knots on it.  It also is joined at the end with an additional 5 knots (more to help keep it together and clearly mark the start and finish than to mimic a rosary).  It's pretty long.  I wore this one on my wrist for many years because without the beads it was light and because it was just string it was washable so very solid for every day wear.  It was designed with meditation in mind, so good for single lines repeated over and over, or for counting times your mind wanders when working with a non-verbal meditation.  It is also good for working with affirmation statements in meditation.

I have a very simple set that I made with some plastic beads my son no longer wanted.  This one is just beads strung on string with knotwork in between to keep them in place.  It ended up with two strands coming from a metal ring.  The beads represent the different deities I work with, so I can sit with the beads and honor each deity in turn.

I just recite the deity's epithets, both traditional and UPG-based. Since there's a lot of them for Hellenic deities to choose from, the prayer can be as long or as short as needed.

If the goal is specifically to meditate, maybe something like a hand-craft would be useful?

I mean, I knit to meditate .. and yes, sometimes my prayers sound more like "ah fuck where's that stitch fuckermonkeys fuckfuck" but .... well, it's KINDA like a prayer! :D:
