when I go thru with sage I wave it around me wander it thru the house and wave it around door frames. what I say while I do it is general, not particular.

something along the lines of 'to cleanse and clear' then I go thru after with sweet grass saying something along the lines of 'to invite the positive' or 'may only the good fill this space' or what not.

if your wanting to contact and discuss with a particular entity you might want to do a lil circle casting and speak directly to that spirit asking that it depart and leave you alone etc.
I dunno the exact situation but if the entity was a former resident type entity you might want to be polite, cuz I mean it was his place too once, just like asking a regular person that you don't dislike but who's overstayed their welcome....you want to remain respectful and tactful and not burn any bridges.

if that's not the situation maybe your just being kept up by a well meaning diety, say you appreciate it but could really use some down time and require this certain situation free of their presence.

or say....I release you to go forth and not return .....or however sounds most polite.

like I said,it's all about breaking it to them tactfully.
unless of course they are a malevolent presence and actively harming, scaring you. then I think you can give them some tough love, but I might do some self protection of you and your space before hand, definately try and follow up with sweet grass and an invitation to positive spirits....nature abhors a vacume.

if anyone else has anything to add or more experience on the subject...corrections to make...please chime in.

examples on breaking it to nice or neutral spirits would be helpful :D id like to know this stuff simply because im going to be moving and i dont mind spirits being elsewhere but rooms like my bedroom and bathroom are the only places id like to be alone. front room and kitchen and stuff is fine. if the spirits/entities must come in my room i would be ok if they are in during the day but like around 10 pm to 7 or 8am i need it for me time.

In my experience you shouldn't need to address the particular energy. Just make sure you smoke the area out well and keep a window or door open. If you do not leave it open the spirit will not be able to leave and could get trapped. Leaving it more aggressive than before.
This is not the place I thought it was.

makes sense. my last 2 cleansing i had done the entities were told to either leave or keep the activity down at night. no physical manifestations or sounds or moving things after 10pm. at 9am or so id be ok with them coming back. the last cleansing i believe cleared them out.

Huh?!? Um, no.

By all means be polite and ask if you need to while doing a smudge.  Often the smoke is enough by itself.  But I strongly disagree with the "never challenge a spirit" idea.  If you have to be firm, be firm.  If it's causing problems stick up for yourself and your home.  You don't have to go start picking a fight or anything, but the idea that you should *never* challenge something that's causing problems is not something that should be automatically not done.

so just saying "leave now!" would be enough? but in a sturdy tone?
