2019 Donation Drive

It's time for our annual Server Donation Drive! We need to raise at least $650 (same as last year) to keep The Cauldron's server online for another year. Please help! Either hit that Paypal button to the right and make a one-time donation in any amount or set up a monthly Bronze, Silver or Gold Donor subscription. You can find more info in this message!

Donations as of 16 Sept 2019: $660 donated. $10 more our minimum goal! Let's beat last year's total of $99 more than the minimum!

Note: This total is updated manually, usually once a day

* "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" Problem Logging In?

If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

I was doing some reading about Yule, (here http://www.wicca.com/celtic/akasha/yule.htm ) and saw a section in the reading that mentioned gods and goddesses associated with it.  In that section, Isis and Ra are mentioned.  What exactly is their association with Yule?  What kinds of offerings would be presented to them to honor them on this holiday?  I don't work with them, but I'd like to honor them somehow during Yule.

Ship and wagon processions performed during Yule (which, afaik, is just a season/month and not the actual celebrations) included a goddess that Tacitus called Isis. Probably where the disinformation came from.

Celebrating this "Yule Isis"  would be something akin to our Christmas parades with floats and icons and partying.

The pace of progress in artificial intelligence (I’m not referring to narrow AI) is incredibly fast. [...] The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most.--Elon Musk

I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence," [Bill] Gates wrote. "First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

It depends whether you mean the specifically Germanic holiday, or Yule as a modern general name for the Winter Solstice/Christmas season. I'm assuming the latter unless you're a Norse Recon. As Ra was the sun god and Isis was the Lady of Heaven and Ra's mother in some traditions, it makes sense to honour these two as the Winter Solstice is often considered to be the time of the birth of the sun. One could celebrate it as the time when Isis gives birth to the sun god as Ra or Horus.

I don't really understand the need to adhere so rigidly to dead cultures from thousands of years ago, when modern western culture is often a melting pot of many cultures, and modern traditions of Neo-Paganism are highly syncretic and universalist.

Perhaps you do not understand it, but some religions do so anyway -- and do not care if [generic] you understands or agrees. :)

As arbitrary standards go, "this is how it appears to have been done when it was a coherent system" is at least as good as "I can come up with a way of making this astronomical phenomenon look relevant".
