Images during meditation - Any ideas on what they are ?
« on: November 26, 2011, 05:41:43 am »
I would say that I have never had any experiences of spirits or out of body stuff to the point where I wonder if I really have any of this sort of ability at all .
I have done some yoga and meditation in the past and read a book on projection on but it was years ago and I never really got to grips with it or unfortunately continue to practice. Also read a couple of other books etc
My interest in finding my own path has been re-kindled and I have recently started to meditate.
During these recent meditations I have seen some images, now this has never happened before and they seem to occur very briefly and in separate meditations. So far there have been four instances which I have described as best I can below .
1) I saw an image of a figure in a hooded cloak (face hidden) standing by a what seemed to be an end of a book . They had an arm stretched out and the end of the book was in fact a door which swung open. When this happened there was what I can only describe like a shockwave  effect (like the transparent shockwave effect you get in films) , when this happened I came out of my meditation with a bit of a jolt.
2) I saw a child/ babys head, first looking down onto it then looking on the right hand side of its face. Following this I seemed to be seeing the inside of a rib cage.
3) I think I saw looking down onto a bare foot. The image then changed to a hand  (left I think) with what appeared to be prayer beads over it which were hanging down and gently swinging.
4) I saw a side view of a lady’s head, head her hair was seemed all bunched up at the back . I was look up at her. I felt as though she may have been riding on a horse, but I only really saw her head which actually was the right hand side of her face.  Then I was looking at a wall that had a opening in it like a window, all of a sudden a bull like head appeared at the opening and then put its head through it. It had very long like horns that curved up and the tips seemed to have been banded with a colour. This happened very fast this took me a bit by surprise  , I then like previously I came out of my meditation with a jolt .
Please may I have some thoughts as to what they may be as I am new to this and have no real knowledge of such things – thank you

As you don't usually have visions, my first impression would be that these are like dream symbols: things that your sub/super conscious thinks would be meaningful to you. What do you think the symbols mean? At this point, yiou don't want to overthink it, what pops into your mind?

Hi RandallS
Thanks for replying ok been thinking about your reply so.... let’s see taking one at a time
1) Ok I also recall a hearing a musical chime during this which I think came just before the image scene etc don't know if adds anything to this or not. Anyway I believe I was coming to the end of reading the T Andrews book I mentioned in my other post. Part of his book he mentions about various guides etc so perhaps that give the book like appearance of the door, but also perhaps the hooded figure was showing me an astral doorway ?or a path that was being opened ?

2)Ok the child’s face could be a new beginning  / birth don’t know it, however I started to read a book about the chakras (this was after this particular meditation and the next one) this book mentions a base chakra that has a Deities associated with it amongst others called Child Brahma when I read that I kinda went wow! but I think this Deity has multiple faces and I only saw one.  possible link here I don’t know ??
3) Again I had not started to read the book on chakras until after this meditation but again the image of the Child Brahma carries a rosary ?  but as I say I discovered this afterwards?

4) I have no real idea what this means, don’t know if this makes sense but it kinda felt like a minotaur type bull oh and I remember that the wall with  the window was a yellow colour. Around this time I was trying to find out some initial basic concepts of Wicca don’t know if that has a bearing on this or not, read a couple of web pages mainly on triple goddess, don’t recall reading about a bull like figure.

Anyhow as I am trying to find my own path I don’t know if these images are one that are just my sub conscious or if they are ones or external influence’s trying to guide / give me a hint. I am a beginner so please excuse my ignorance and I don’t want to offend anyone,  so I may have got this wrong but when people about their goddess /god revealing themselves to them do they actually mean that or would this be no more than imagery from your sub conscious during meditation ?? Sorry find this all a bit confusing.

What were you trying to do in the meditation? The way I was taught and practice, you need some context to interpret meditation experiences. I might get the same image in different meditation experiences, but it might mean quite different things.

For example, I might get a flower or scent while meditating on the seasonal changes - but I might get that very same flower or scent while meditating on connecting to deity. In the latter case, though, it'd mean something more specific/different. Same thing with animals - a bear in a meditation about health and healing might suggest periods of significant rest/recovery/hibernation, but in a meditation focused on connecting to deity, might suggest specific deities more strongly.

One of the things I look for in that kind of meditation is "how likely is it that my subconscious would pick *this thing* randomly out of all the things it might pick?"

I also look at the senses used - I am very much not a visual learner/processor, but in meditation, when I get a strong visual, I am pretty sure that it is something outside me involved (usually deity, but not always). If instead I'm getting tactile sensations, or spatial information, or sound, it's possible that that's more my subconscious.

When I did the initial meditation work in my tradition to connect to deity, I had extremely strong visuals (and interestingly enough, *only* visuals and scent.) It became clear pretty quickly that that was outside my usual experience, and I should pay attention.

But at the same time, I don't 'trust' anything in meditation without further confirmation. Before even committing to further work with M'Lady, I went off, and did the research I could (given some pretty limited info at the time - a general physical appearance, sense of location-of-origin, one particular smell, a particular kind of flower, and that was about it.) I did some divination, where I was more directly in control of the questions and process. I talked to my teachers and other people I respected as religious elders. And then I did some work without long-term commitments for a while, before committing to M'Lady far more deeply.

Now, if all of that had been coming solely from my subconscious, there are things that would still be helpful to me. But I know that because I sat down and looked at them hard, spent time just sitting with the ideas (rather than going out and acting on them immediately) and poking at them and their consequences from different directions.

Hi Jenett
Thanks for your reply
I have been trying to recall what I was doing, I think in meditations 1 - 3 I was generally trying to concentrate on entering a state of meditation past the initial calming down phase so I expect to start with I was mindful of my breath. I would have been aware of the concept of chakra's and also in my mind would have been the thought of having guides as I had read the book Enchantment of the Faerie Realm.
Meditation 4 I did not have a specific topic in mind but do recall asking for guidance, I also remember wondering if I should be doing this in a circle, so I mentally thought of being in one, but I don't really understand the concept.
I did not want to ignore images that may have some obvious meaning that experienced people could interpret, where as I could easily miss understand. I guess when your just starting out it is difficult to know if its your subconscious or something else influencing you.
It' obvious I have so much to discover, research and to learn. I do need to keep a diary and enter in what I am trying to do and any results.

There is a reason a lot of intro magical and related books say "Take Good Notes!" It really is helpful.

I've got an example, though in my case, it's coming from dreams rather than meditation (in large part because when I first started doing meditation work, I learned to do it in a pretty controlled setting, with very specific goals, so random images popping up wasn't common for anyone.)

So, I have a bunch of themes that show up in dreams. One of them is something like a large bear (the face is a bit different, though.) The other is a dinosaur (something close to a T-Rex, but a bit smaller.)

Both of these have turned up in multiple dreams over the years. (I don't remember my dreams very often, and I have now a 10 year record of the ones I do remember, so I can actually say that.)

Thing is, over time, I can tell that the dinosaurs are.. well, funky thing that happens in dreams. They might have some generalised symbolic meaning (free-roaming anxiety about something, or a need for something to kick me into moving into a new situation). But mostly, they don't mean much. They chase me around wherever, the dream moves on, I wake up.

But the bear? That one, clearly is something a lot more complicated - from the data I have, and the work I've done in other forms (specific meditation, divination, conversations with other people), it's clear it's probably another person (someone I haven't met yet in face to face life.) and that the bear form is meaningful to that relationship.

But it took me about 4 years to have enough data to figure that out. (I don't remember my dreams very often, and the bear-thing shows up once or twice a year in a good year.)

Sometimes random things that come up are random. Sometimes they're related to what you were doing right before meditating/sleeping/whatever. Sometimes they're something more important - but you're only going to know with some more data.

In wicca, there is the Lord some call the Horned one. From what i've read, he completes the Goddess. Might be wrong but worth checking it out :)
