Having trouble finding a path?
« on: July 01, 2012, 11:04:24 pm »
I've grown up in a Christian household and up until about a year ago I was Catholic, but then was atheist. I guess I could say the things I had a problem with were the belief that  yes, there IS a god, and what happens after you die.  I believe once you're dead, you're in the ground, but I DO believe there's some sort of energy that gives us(meaning the entire universe) life. I believe there is a form of energy that is god, but that god is not personal and anthropomorphic. I also think humans have the ability (at least to some extent) to control this energy. I think this energy is love, pleasure, joy, faith, (all that good stuff, in general) and that a content state of mind can bring this energy to us, whether its by the use of spells, rituals, meditation, prayer, whatever makes YOU feel good. I'd say I have a pantheist sort of view on the form of god. I believe spells and rituals work if you attach your own energy to them, and that this sort of magic (though not influenced by any "gods") exists. I understand that I do not have to conform to any path, but IS there one that is similar to what I've described, or am I forging my own?

Welcome to TC. If I had to label you, I'd try something like "pantheist who believes in magic (as a craft)"

First of all, hi :) You sound a lot like me!

I am not aware of any one belief system or "tradition" that incorporates all the things you describe here. But the elements are certainly part of particular paths. The kind of magic you describe is used in most witchcraft paths, for example.

May I suggest you do a lot of reading? It's hard to give you a definite answer after one paragraph, there are still so many nuances and variations that you couldn't possibly cover here. If you however read (the more reliable authors) on different paths, you will probably realise quickly which one your own beliefs correspond to the most - if any.

A personal note: Beeing a seeker rocks. You'll discover much more than you were initially looking for :)
