On animal totems.

Is there a set path to meeting your town animal, or is it different for everyone?

I ask, because throughout my life, I have felt a "connection" to the wolf.  I find they're beautiful and magnificent creatures, far greater than some members of our own species.

On two separate occasions, I have had two different, non connected spiritualists tell me that my totem is a black wolf.  One went as far to say he muttered something in Cherokee.  Now I have never seen him, and rarely felt his presence.  When I asked the priestess of a local coven, she only mentioned that it is learned during the "second year, blah blah."

This obviously leaves me confused and frustrated.  During the first ritual I attended, I asked my mom to be there.  Yet I distinctly felt the familiar, canine presence between myself and the priestess.  (New moon ritual, in circle.)  It was close enough that I could've reached down and scratched it between the ears.

Since that was the closest moment, I haven't felt him since.  At least not that close.  He may have been there during the last ritual, watching from the shadows.

So here I am.  Am I imagining things, or is it wishful thinking?

I don't have much in personal experience here, but...

Here is Lupa's website with more resources: The Green Wolf.  She's written a few books on the subject:  New Paths to Animal Totems and DIY Totemism
I am the Goddess of Who I can Become. I mix the magic of the sorceress with the blade of a warrior. I walk the liminal pathways to see the face of the Goddess, both terrible and kind. As She stares back at me, I tremble in awe and ecstasy.  --SatAset

Ok, thank you.  I'll have to check them out.

I think it's different for everyone since each person experiences meditation and the like differently.  I'm a big fan of Ted Andrews.  He has two books.  I used his first, "Animal Speak".  It's how I am learning to meet and develop a relationship with my animal totem.  He also explains that while we all have at least one animal totem that is with us through life, other animal spirits will come to us at certain times and explains what they all mean.
